| | | Posted by Rust The building was torched on purpose as a way to "expedite" the demolition process. |
I haven't heard evidence of this yet, but it's possible. As far as I know, the city owns the property and is trying to sell it. Since the fire was contained to a non-historic part of the facility, it could also be a scrapper that accidentally started a fire while cutting with a torch, which happens frequently in abandoned buildings. Or, perhaps a homeless perhaps had lit a fire to stay warm and it got out of control. I suppose it could even just be regular arson with no motive other than to burn something down. One of the articles above states: "Police are looking for a white male in his thirties who was seen in the area at the time of the fire. He’s described as 5’10” with a stocky build and a Mohawk style hair cut. He also had a dark complexion and police said he might be Aboriginal."

| | | An individual matching that description was scrapping with a torch on one of the higher floors when ninja and I were there a few months ago.

| | | Regardless of wether the fire was on purpose or not it wasn't the first fire that ever happened inside there. I guess it was just the first one big enough to get that kind of attention... Interesting about the guy with the mohawk though.
