| | Rat Race... Again. < on 9/13/2012 12:57 AM >
| | | I went looking for the gold at the end of the rainbow... 1. The journey begins here, with the Danger Ranger, around 4:00pm.
2. The first section of the drain. Hurrrdurrrr
3. Lovely, lovely mold. Interesting: see that hole in the middle? While I was trying to photo the mold (it's apparently very difficult and time consuming to photo mold in a drain) a train went by overhead and shook the place up, and a LARGE bubble came blooping out of a small crack in the middle of the hole. I wonder if there is natural gas or some swamp gas trapped under the drain, and when the trains shake the ground just enough escapes to feed some mold?
4. The second, older, and arch shaped section.
5. More drain goodness.
6. The 'squashed' section
7. Getting older
8. Dicking around
9. Hastily cemented off sidepipe? You have my attention, Drain, go ahead.
10. Drain Angel
11. Bam. Buried train bridge.
12. Wicked
13. I totally made a bong out of a 40oz Miller High Life. Am I a badass or what?
14. I actually have another 40oz High Life here with me and I'm thinking of making a two chamber, double distilled superbong
15. Somehow I feel a joke coming on in the comic about a superbong
16. This
17. I stopped here cause I didn't want to get my camera wet. Lame.

| | | Also, can anyone offer tips on less film grain with long exposures? These are all shot at about 25-30 seconds at f3.5 and iso200 with a kit lens

| | | nice write up captain. try one of the noise reduction programs out there (of which there are many) until you find one you like and that works well for you. your camera may even have a noise reduction option but often the use of that internal feature can actually lead to more noise. so go figure. nice shot of the water coming through man!

Try maybe a f4-4.5 and a slightly shorter exposure. Some editing programs could also help.

Interestng. I have been setting it for 25 or 30 seconds out of convinence and then only lighting for 10 or 15 seconds then letting it sit in the dark, maybe that's where the grain is coming from

I was going to suggest that. I tend to shoot at f8 (out of convenience, mostly) but it works great, usually. I am just a master at forgetting to adjust my ISO -_-"

| | | Shoulda gone further, there's more to see. Also, yeah - letting the camera sit in the dark without it capturing any light will definitely cause more grain to appear. Your ISO settings are good, anything higher and you will see more grain. A higher f-stop will make things less blurry but let less light in and will cause you to have to do a longer exposure with the light on for longer to compensate.

| | | Rumor has it that Lot E (that sits on top of Rat Race) is going to be converted to a parking garage for the convention center expansion in 2014. Which means we may loose one of the coolest sections of this tunnel system. Some folks don't like RR, but the mineral formations inside are just too wicked.
