Going-away party for a sewer junction

Steam and I found this huge, brick sewer back in April. The junction of a 90-inch pipe and a 72-inch pipe has been our favourite feature (I call it the Grand Junction).

Just a couple months ago, we found out that the junction would be abandoned, a section of the 90-inch pipe bypassed, and a new, concrete junction put in its place just downstream. The prospect of losing it was made more real by my discovery of an estimated start date for the abandonment work: October 1.

We had to do something special.

3.

4. And for those curious, the new junction under construction:

Great photos, nice to see under Portland. Knew those maps weren't lying. It's usually quite sad when a city replaces historic brick with new concrete (whether it be a building or a sewer!).

Yeah, but it has to be done. Have you ever seen what happens when one of those fails? It happened 15 years ago in San Francisco during a rain storm. Swallowed up a bunch of houses.

Yeah, I found some document a while back evaluating the damage potential for failure of different segments of sewer, and this one was ranked "catastrophic" or something equally ominous (but at low risk of failure). The pipe downstream of this is nearly 12 feet in diameter for nearly 2/3 of a mile, so you can imagine how much flow must rush through here sometimes.

Nevertheless, they are only replacing the sections that will soon be under the new light rail. That is to say, they are still putting off the replacement of this 100+ year old sewer, only making the job down the road a little bit easier.

I was more bemoaning that it's a rare occasion when a (North American) city pays more than lip service (or even gives a nod to) to its historical sewer structures.

Funny, a couple years ago Vancouver also ripped out and re-routed some old brick sewers for the new rapid transit tunnels. I understand the necessity of doing such things, of course, but newness isn't necessarily a guarantee of solidity.

This is amazing. I have yet to see any large sewer tunnels in WA.

Very nice - And I gotta admit, Im more than a little surprised at the (remaining, intact) brick tunnel still cohesive after all these wet, nasty PDX winters/springtimes.

Born & raised in the 503, too, btw. Fresh back on the scene after 8 years in (gasp!) California.

Forgot how fucking cold and wet it is here...nonetheless, glad to be home...VERY interested to continue my love of UE at home. Its a wide open fresh scene for me here, so Im thrilled to discover not only this site, but real-life UE guys & girls right here in my beloved P-town =)

Come down to one of our meetups. We have public meetings every first Monday of the month, 7pm at the Lucky Lab on Hawthorne.

There is still stuff to do while the drains are filled with water

Funny you should mention that!!...I was digging around on teh intarwebz and found (iirc...not positive, though) a blogspot page or similar stating exactly what you said; 1st Monday of the month, Lucky Lab.

This was maybe three weeks ago - so, I diligently entered this critical info into my beloved Android, & off I went, completely forgetting about it.

So on the first Monday of this fine November, I was notified by my dearest Android...but, goddamnit if three completely seperate 'family emergencies' sprang up & bitchslapped my UE hopes right outta the sky. Like King Kong swatting a crappy little paper plane from the sky...ugh.

Teething baby. 'Nother one on the way, poor fiance with horrible morning sickness. Working overtime to cover being one guy down, since, for the life of me I cant find BUT ONE decent fucking network tech to join my skeleton ceew. These things are trying to keep me from exploring...

...but come Hell or high water, I will be there, along with my girl, cuz she's just getting into the whole UE things & is a natural...plus, she's my best friend & we never do anything without the other...been teased over this for 6 years...BUT ANYWAY, Ill frickin BE THERE!!
