Quicksilver memories

The hills of Napa, Sonoma and Lake counties were home to a large number of mercury (aka "quicksilver) mines which started back the 1860's when the price of mercury briefly doubled. At least six mining towns came and went in Sonoma county alone. Apparently some mercury was still being produced up until 1972.

I came across a couple of old mercury mines that are slowly rusting away. There's nothing much left that I could find to connect to the miners but here are some photos from one of the mines.

Great find. Here's another one I posted a while back:

Not the same location, but very similar in structure.

Thanks everyone. I appreciate the comments. When I posted these I wasn't sure that anyone would be interested so it's good to get some feedback. The lighting wasn't great so I expect other people could get some better shots than this.

Nice set! I found some info on a quicksilver mine a couple hours away from me but there is so many warnings from the EPA that I am unsure if it is worth the risks. I heard mercury can really mess you up! After looking at these pictures, I am thinking it might just be

This strikes me hard because Mercury mining in South America goes on with a life expectancy, in some places, of 30. The workers know it but have no other source of income.

As long as you aren't overly touching everything and maybe wear a pair of shoes you don't mind chucking afterward when you get back to your car, don't bring pets (dogs), drink or eat anything around, one trip isn't gonna harm you. Unless you roll around in the dirt and go swimming in a local swimmin' hole n drink the water ;)

I stumbled across this one and it took forever for me to get back out to it with a camera. I posted it as "Mad Hatting".

I little further down the road(towards Cloverdale) there is another and seemingly larger one that I am looking forward to checking out.

Do you do many explorations up here? I am always looking for new exploration buddies

Sorry about that. I didn't see your thread. I would have just added my photos to your thread rather than create my own if I'd seen it. The other mine you mentioned (which I also saw but didn't visit) would probably be worth a visit as it's a little further off the main road and probably more pristine as a result.

Feel free to PM if you want someone to explore with. I only live about 45 minutes south of you.

Went into about 3 buildings before seeing this:

We didn't make it around the actual mill but we did get into some of the other scattered buildings:

@pgahtriller: we actually were at a different location that the one Partime posted... I created a new thread for that one, since I didn't see one for it yet.
