Tasmanian Mines

So recently, I was able to spend a little bit of time in Tasmania, Australia. Tassie normally gets lumped in with the "no places to explore" states of Australia. Although there's very little in terms of topside stuff, there is a heap of underground locations waiting to be explored, some of which haven't been seen by humans in around a hundred years.

Tassie has a super rich mining history which stretches from 1834 up until the present day. The state was mined for gold, coal, tin, copper and lead with the 1880s being the time with the most goldfields in operation.

I set out to find some of the more forgotten mines during my time in Tassie and I was lucky enough to get my dirty mitts on some geological mine surveys done in the early 1900s by the then state geologist W.H. Twelvetrees. His survey maps, all done in chain measurement and super accurately plotted, along with recent Geoscience Australia topographical maps meant I could pinpoint where I thought mines should be.

Finding them proved to be an altogether different story. Walking through thick scrub is just about bearable at the the best of times, but couple it with looking for holes in the side of hills that may not exist and you have a fantastic way to drive yourself completely crazy. My compass became my best friend, because I didn't have any left after I'd persuaded them to come on one of my "recce" walks.

Anyway, after much swearing and frustration the mines slowly began to show themselves, some exactly where I thought, some miles away. It was pretty clear that we were probably some of the only people to see some of these mines since the early 1900s at least. Most weren't super exciting, only being small shaft + crosscut adit affairs, but it was cool to get a feel for some history none the less.

I'm about the worst explorer to post on forums because I tend to not take too many photos and when I do they normally come out pretty awful, but here are a few of the places we found.

Golden Crown Mine

Unknown Mine

Golden Ball Mine, once the richest in East Tasmania

Shame about the scenery round these parts though

I have a few more if anyone is interested, but my internet is spotty at best, and uploading takes ages on imgur.

Excellent finds! That must have been really cool seeing a place that's been lost for so long.

Tassie has some amazing locations in relation to the size. I have never done any mines. Glad you found some.
