Anyone get around to exploring the Abitibi mill before it was demolished? Anyone been through the part that's still standing (http://kenoraphoto...mill/the-mill.html)? Or does anyone at least know what's going on there? is it still in use or just waiting to be sold? I've seen lights on there, but never seen anyone around.

I'm new and interested in getting out and around; message me if you want to explore. Also, check out my flickr by clicking on the house beside the colorful envelopes.

I have a mills of ontario book. I don't see this one listed. maybe it is one of the ones off the list to be protected.

I would love the information behind it. (river it is on, date of opening, owners, products made).

Here's where it is on google maps: http://maps.google...aps?q=abitibi+mill,+kenora&hl=en&ll=49.773269,-94.48667&spn=0.007871,0.0262&sll=49.853822,-97.152225&sspn=0.502916,1.67 6788&hq=abitibi+mill,&hnear=Kenora,+Kenora+District,+Ontario&t=h&z=16

Part of it has been torn down, but you can see the building that's still there (which is what is photographed in the link in my first post). It was a pulp and paper mill. It was run by a company called Abitibi-Consolidated, which has since merged with a company called Bowater to become AbitibiBowater. Here is a brief timeline of the ownership of the mill:

The facilities opened in 1923 under the ownership of Backus-Brooks. Sometime in the mid 1930s, Ontario and Minnesota Paper Company takes over at the mill. In the early/mid 60s, Boise Cascade Company took over (they eventually changed the name of their paper division to Rainy River Forest Products). In the mid 1990s, ownership transferred yet again, this time to Stone-Consolidated. Stone-Consolidated merged with Abitibi-Price in May of 1997 to form the company Abitibi-Consolidated, the Kenora mill was part of Stone at the time of the merger. I don't have the exact years of some of these middle transfers at the moment, but will post them when I figure them out.

It was closed down in 2004, and in 2009, the sulphite plant was torn down (http://youtu.be/4XslY4HnIbU) [this part had been built ~1989 I think] and only the recycling plant and a couple of warehouses remain standing in an otherwise vast/empty yard. I believe the city of kenora/province of ontario is trying to sell what remains, however is looking to introduce a new industry and will not sell it to any paper/recycling/etc related companies.

I gathered this together with about 15 minutes of research, so I can probably get more info if you like!
