my view on urbex as of late, especially florida urbex

i know i was guilty of asking for places back in the day like, where is the rocket, where is this power plant but its gotten to the point where that aspect of urban exploring where people go find something is totally gone. they just want to get there. they are so concerned about the destination instead of the journey getting to that destination, thats where a lot of the urbex culture misses out and where its losing a lot of its luster. when you talk about comradery and the soul of urbex, thats something huge thats definitely missing. a lot of the meat of urban exploring and the backbone of it, is believe it or not, NOT exploring at a particular location. it's everything except that. it's kinda disappearing and getting less and less...in my mind anyway.

the soul of urbex is that collective feeling you get either exploring alone or with your crew. that sense of exploring. the sense of what just went down, how you feel, your environment, what youre exploring, who youre exploring with. the soul is that combination of all those million little things that are involved with urbex, from literally all those million things that ARENT involved with urbex like just hanging out with your friends after exploring, driving around, getting lost, the conversations and inside jokes. i say the soul of urbex is all those things that you cant really pinpoint and if you try to, youll just keep pinpointing all those millions of things are awesome about urbex.

I'm glad to see you posting this, especially after the rant on location publishing via the google.

My first explore at age 14 was the ROXY Theater in Quincy, Florida (I'm 40 now). It was shuttered for 30+ years and it was AWESOME! I didn't tell anyone because I felt they wouldn't understand what I felt when reading a sign that pointed to a balcony stairs that said "COLOREDS ONLY". They wouldn't understand the interest in a leaning tobacco barn full of artifacts of days long gone. My feelings are mine alone, and I'm not bold enough to share them with my current circle of friends.

The marquee sign from that building is now stored in the garage at my mom's. It was acquired legally when the building was demolished. My wife won't let me bring it home and mount it above the fireplace.

We all take what we need from it. Some gather here for the awesome photos of awesome locations. Some want to post some photos and gain notoriety (and try too hard and ruffle the feathers of the secret society members).
I look at the growing popularity of urban exploration as anything else that gathers momentum due to the internet. A website, forum or chatroom exists for any and everything. Lots of people interested in lots of things. They just coalesce into a combined group of people with differing angles on the same hobby, job, perversion or what have you. It's just the nature of it.
I had no idea whatsoever that this many people shared a similar interest in derelict or unused buildings.

I'm not in Florida but I know what you mean.

For the past five years I've been going exploring consistently several times a month if not weekly, and there's a constantly changing parade of North Americans who come here and take interest in my work. Some have been very helpful, but most don't amount to anything.

I get a constant stream of requests for locations and people who want to follow along with me, and I mostly ignore them unless they have their own locations to offer, have some relevant skill set, or are attractive and female. At the risk of sounding elitist, if you're not seeking locations, you're not urban exploring.

What I think I hear you saying Nomeus is that you are moved by many different aspects of exploring and being at the location is just one aspect. Doing a reconnaissance trip to gather information about security is an aspect. Researching the history of a location is an aspect as much as packing the car for the trip there. Doing the detective work to pinpoint a location is an aspect that all to often gets overlooked in the rush to be there.

The journey is as important as the destination, the photos are done for fun.

I like that our local group can't decide for the first hour of any meetup where we're going, but we have fun sitting around talking about it. I like that I've learned of at least 3 great restaurants in the area thanks to our post-exploring munchies. I am thrilled that I've met so many talented photographers and skilled explorers. And I love that I've learned more about my city in the past 5 years than any of the past 20+ that I've lived here.

If your goal is to just get a prized shot, then go out and find it on your own. But if you want to learn why it's a prized shot and actually share in some work, then by all means join up.

Nailed it. No exploration is complete without a good story, either of how you got there and what you did there, or what happened to the place, or what it used to be. It fleshes out a pile of art-fagginess into an actual experience.

Just checking a location off a list like a notch on a bedpost seems so empty and pointless.

What's exploring without the find. That's what makes it exciting. So where is the rocket? j/k.

Now I had originally considered asking him if he wanted any crackers and cheese with that whine but it seemed so inappropriate at the time. Anyway give poor nomeus a break, even Ron Jeremy couldn't deliver the rocket every time he was asked.

That's the thing though, the find is not the be all and end all. The magic is in the process. Its like this, "See yalls tha microwave generation, just thro it in tha cooker an hit tha button. Now you expect instant results without the hassle of the work." -A Sharpton.

See, even the Rev gets it.

I love driving in a place you have been 1000 times before and noticing an abandonment that you have never seen before.

Nomeus,

I'm with you 100 percent! I like exploration not just going to some place.

Whenever I go someplace I haven't been before, I see something I had never seen. It doesn't have to be some big fancy abandoned building for me to enjoy it. If you think "it is all about the find", I think you are missing half the fun.

Others have differing opinions. There are some members who enjoy photography of abandoned buildings and urban decay and don't particularly enjoy the exploration aspect as much. I'm fine with that, their hobby just isn't exactly the same as mine.

7 hours? I've driven 1200 miles to sit in the middle of Nebraska waiting for storms to initiate. Ended up being blue skies. But a bunch of us got together and still have fun. That makes it worth it right there.
