| | Fern's House < on 7/31/2012 2:59 PM >
| | | aka the TRS-80 House aka Coleman House aka Fern's House aka You've Probably Seen This Place Before And I've Nothing New For You To See House
The owner of this house, John Lloyd Ferns, graduated from the University of Toronto where he found work as a Chemical Engineer. John had a brother named Edward who passed away in 2006. As far as I know John was not married and had no children. John passed away on January 5, 2008 at the age of 86. John was largely into amateur radio broadcasting as evident by the electronics found inside his house. John's call sign was VE3BZF. circa 1978
This location first made its way through the Urb-net in September of 2009 when discovered by member Photocbear. Upon his initial discovery much of the house's contents were intact. In a back room one could find rows of books lining a bookshelf, a TRS-80 Radio Shack computer along with floppy disk drives situated at a computer desk, assorted printers and amateur radio gear scattered throughout the house. The furniture sat as if in anticipation that the owner, John Lloyd Ferns, would arrive home at any moment and sit down in the living room where his stacks of magazines lay neatly piled. Numerous collectable stubby beer bottles and liquor bottles indicated that Mr. Ferns most likely enjoyed his alcohol. Despite the house looking relatively untouched, a note on the door scolded people for having been inside to steal property in the 20 months that Mr. Ferns had passed away. Explorers fortunate enough to visit this location as early as September of 2009 were able to bear witness to the extreme demise of this location. Today much of the computer hardware is gone, the stubby bottles have vanished, the furniture has been removed and various electronic equipment has been removed. It is quite possible that family has taken care of some of Mr. Ferns possessions but I believe that much of what was inside has been stolen. For anyone who wonders why we follow an etiquette of not removing anything from a location, here is a visual demonstration. Would you rather browse through this collection of books, examine the certificates on the wall, poke through 1980's computer hardware and visualize life as John Ferns lived it... (photo by photocbear) or kick up the dust as you walk through largely empty rooms, noticing spots on the wall where certificates used to hang, and taking photos of empty rooms? Thieves like this should be pissed on.

| | | I was there on the weekend, was driving past so pulled in the laneway to have a peek. Parked in the usual spot between the trees. My cell rang, problems at home so off I went and that was it LOL My fave location to hit, sad to see all the stuff gone!

| | | Looks like one could've spent hours poking around here back in the day before it all disappeared. Nice spot still today though. Great shots man.

| | | What a great place. I love the exterior. Sad story about the place though. Hopefully it was his family that came for his stuff. Great shots!

| | | Sounds like a case of an Estate dispute. I wonder how many items at antique dealers are really stolen by thieves or dealers themselves. Thieves and scrappers make me sick - get a JOB and make honest money like a real man.

cant do that without an ownership - I'd grab it if it was for sale if it isn't too rough...but looks like it is. Body panels for that car would have to be hand made.

Ownerships can be obtained for $40 and a signed affidavit as long as the VIN number is still intact. But yes, bodywork would be a chore on that beast, you'd for sure want to polish up on your english wheel and lead skills.

interesting - can you elaborate? an affidavit from whom? What do you figure it is, a '60 Imperial? I suspect this car is too far gone though - look at the rockers and front fender. Done like dinner cooked with a blowtorch [last edit 8/9/2012 10:06 PM by Alpha67 - edited 1 times]

Anything can be repaired. I recently witnessed the rescue of this '52 VW Bus. The new owner (My friend Florian) paid $5,000 and is shipping it to France to restore it.
So I'm sure some Mopar guys would be happy to get their hands on that car. Going by the back window and C pillar, it's a '59 Imperial Coupe. Such a ridiculous looking car. The affidavit needs to be signed by a Commissioner of Oaths or a Notary Public, it varies with what county or region you live in. They can explain everything at Service Ontario. /end automotive hijack [last edit 8/10/2012 1:37 AM by bandi - edited 1 times]

| | | Very cool. From the books laying around, this gentlemen must have been a life long learner. And graduating from university back then was a big thing. Sad to see it being demo'ed. I hope his relatives went in to preserve some of his memories ... especially his degree? on the piano ...

| | | I visited the site, and it is NOT being demolished. It has been purchased and the new owners are renovating, so all is not lost! They are preserving as much of the heritage features as possible. Sadly, the car was indeed scrapped, but they are keeping some of the books that were left behind. The location is now active.
