Escape and Evasion - Incredibly pic heavy and I even tried to write the story of the trip! :P

On my last visit to this location, I arrived at sundown, took maybe 3 shots and went to bed, leaving my camera on. The next morning I was not able to shoot so I wandered around and explored sans camera. On my way out I promised myself I'd come back to shoot this place and I did. I was able to get away from the wife and kids for the day and headed up from the cottage, cutting off about 2 hours or so of travel time. Turning off the hard pavement of hwy 69, I began the dusty drive down to the start of the 45 min walk to the spot. If you like what you see check out the rest, theres a lot, over at http://www.flickr....72157630826504098/

First, a little history

The start of the walk in

It was a beautiful day, the sun was shining and it was 23 or so and not too hot. Aware of the ongoing gun shots from hunters who were a good distance away I made good time heading down the trail. About thirty mins in to my walk, I ran in to a few guys from the military, dressed in dark orange jump suits with a large P on them. I instantly knew they were on an escape and evasion ex and they were the prey. We chatted about where the instructors might be or the m.p.'s all of whom were looking for the "prisoners" scattered about. Wishing them well, I headed back off to get to my destination.

Scattered along the trail in are remnants of what was once here. Old electrical boxes, telephone poles and signs.

I rounded the final bend and was greeted with the beautiful view of decay, Camp Bison in all her gutted glory!

Burwash-33 by ZensLens, on Flickr

I stopped first on the remains of a house? and a small building that seems to have trees growing all around it.

After a brief tour of these structures I ventured forth through the tall grass towards my goal. Stashing my bag I grabbed my water and camera and set off to fill up a memory card.

I shot the first go around all with the 50mm, mostly on the tripod and when I went the other way, I shot the 105, mostly hand held at 1600.

Here are a bunch of my faves from the day!

After taking a lot of shots with the 50 I switched it over to the 105 and went for the intimate side of Burwash

I was also treated to a great sight of two Cranes flying by, they are incredibly loud! Quite something to see birds of that size in flight.

Fantastic set. Funny, I found a barrel with the same company logo (Dearborn Chemical) on it underground at the remains of a factory out my way.

The vantage point in 148 is one that I have seen in the picture sets from so many others, but it never ceases to impress. That has got to be one of Ontario's grandest abandonment landscape shot locations right there.

I am a big fan of the colour combination in 105 and of the shot of the ruined stage in 73 with the water and moss on the ground in front of it. All the galleries I've seen here and I do not remember seeing this room. I must have just not paid proper attention, but the clarity of your photos demand full scrutiny! Your shots make me realize how much of a difference a camera worth good $$$ can make! Beautiful photos!!

Thanks guys! This is what I found on the Dearborn Co. The Dearborn Chemical Company, established in 1888 by chemist William H. Edgar, specialized in making water treatments that would reduce the formation of mineral deposits in boilers and other industrial equipment.

Burwash is a great spot and next time I head back I am panning on overnighting it to get some night shots with the sky lit up by the stars and hopefully a good moon.

Awesome! You really captured the place nicely. I miss it already.
Definitely hit up the roof for some night shots, it's a lot of fun with a bottle of whiskey and a few friends. ;) lol

Nice set Zen. Interesting about the training being done.

Was there anyone else there when you were?? One of the windows in 170 looks like someone is in there. . .

Its so relieving when you hit 33 and know you're almost there

Thanks for the warning. I came face to ankle with a striking Massassauga Rattlesnake at Bruce Peninsula a dozen years ago. He missed me, but I stuck around and got a beauty close up shot.

I just spoke with a friend of mine who knows was more about birds than I. He is pretty sure that the Cranes I saw were the Sandhill crane. http://en.wikipedi...iki/Sandhill_Crane

I don't usually do any HDR but every now and then I screw around with a couple shots just for the fun of it. Here are the two I did from Burwash.. I'm not a fan of the first one but I do like what it does for the second shot.
