| | | September 11th, 1938: A Tragedy at the Simpson Farm (24 pics) < on 7/30/2012 5:48 PM >
| | | After skipping our southwestern tour for bigger fish in the Muskokas, we finally got around to hitting up the spots we had targeted. Beautiful natural rural decay was what we were after, and we found what we were looking for. One location we visited in particular has a tragic story associated with it. This is the former Lee Simpson farm, located about 50 km southwest of London. After being 'found' by lone wolf back in late 2010 and shared elsewhere, dave summer posted a great set here recently (The House of Dangers). I was happy to both enjoy the inner space of the farmhouse and locate some additional history of the tragedy that occurred on the evening of September 11, 1938. On that night, Lieutenant James Breathitt III of the 27th Squadron USAF out of Selfridge Field Michigan and a native of Hopkinsville Kentucky, was flying blind on a return trip from Washington to his base. Despite fair weather being reported from Buffalo and favourable instrument readings, he went down in bad weather and died when his plane exploded upon crashing into a tree on the Simpson Farm. He had been in Washington conducting business and visiting his mother. His decapitated body was found still strapped into his seat 400 feet from the main wreckage of the plane. He failed to escape by parachute, which was found open and lying on the ground. Midway between the wreck and his body his watch was found, which had stopped at 9:07. He was identified via papers found in his pockets. He was only 25 years old. If the house existed in 1878, the Ontario County Atlas shows the land being potentially owned by a James Eddie. I was not able to find out when the farm became abandoned, but the latest date we found on anything was a calendar dated 1961. The level of decay in the house seems to reveal that it has been at least four decades since it was inhabited. Link to article in the Montreal Gazette giving details of the story (the link takes you to page 2 of 22, the story is actually on page 3 in the middle below the cartoon): http://news.google...gFAAAAIBAJ&pg=3210,1447002 Enjoy the tour! 1. | | | Great take on the place Doom! Glad you got out there. You got some great detail shots. I've been trying to remember to look for the smaller details when I'm shooting. I find that I'm missing them while trying to get the big picture. Great history on the place as well.

| | | Posted by rockandrollfreak Love the look of this place, unspoiled and not vandalized! It would be cool to see if that tree is still there!!!!
|
If the tree was mature in 1938, it would be pretty old now! I seem to recall reading somewhere it was an elm tree. I have read that elm trees can live to well over 100 years, so it's possible. Maybe an old timer from the area is still alive and would remember. They'd be pretty damned old now, too!

Thanks Dave! Yes, I often am guilty of documenting the space and not the details too. But this place offered them up freely. Was very pleased with this visit.

| | | A great read and a nice diversity of pics. I was with RNRF - as I scrolled through the pics I was hoping you'd have one of a massive tree on the property. Even with no proof that it was "the one" it would still be eerie. I love the symmetry of the windows and torn curtains in #6. There are so many gems here but I kept rolling back to that one.

Indeed, the way the curtains have blown in and tattered over time is fantastic. As soon as I saw that I said audibly 'Hell, yes!' (or maybe fuck yeah, I can't recall). Notice the hole in the floor by the piano. If it gets too much bigger that sucker is gonna start it's descent!

| | | U_e...thanks! Zen, yes indeed they do. a-e...thanks! Yes, the elements have worked this place over. Surprised the old linoleum has stood up so well...it looked almost pristine. That shit lasts! Can't say the same for some of the flooring. Definitely some dangers in this place.

Skye: re: the piano...no I didn't...it seemed pretty fragile although I kinda now wish I had. No HDR...single exposure hand-held as always. And some tweaks. OBviously. Thanks!
