| | What happened to Dorothy Downs? (IL) < on 7/23/2012 4:10 PM >
| | | This is my first photo post, so I hope it's alright! This is by far my favorite explore. I got the address of this house, and glanced at the street view. My boyfriend and I were hesitantly driving down the street as he said "it should be riiiight... here," We both simultaneously moaned "Awww yeah." The house is large, overgrown, and obviously abandoned. The roof is sagging and the upstairs window has tattered curtains blowing cinematically in the breeze. Getting in was easy, we just had to make sure we weren't noticed. 1. Kitchen pantry Huge variety of items left behind. The calendar to the right of this picture was from Sept. 1986 if I remember correctly.
2. Dental care
We walked through the small kitchen and into the living and dining rooms. There were just piles of open boxes and bags and large pieces of furniture everywhere. If my lungs were invincible I could spend a week in this house. Toward the opposite end of the first floor we came across even more decaying mess. 3. Player piano Real proof that this house remains unvisited. What's the first thing people do when they see a piano? Play it. My boyfriend did just that. The keys stayed stuck down. The scrolls are stacked in an upstairs bedroom Ollivander-style.
4. Antique The curved glass cabinet is locked. This is in the kitchen next to the dining room.
5. 1901 potbelly stove This is right in the middle of the house, where the condition is the worst. Just up ahead is where the player piano is.
Also, that framed picture above the stove is of a cat. There are two. 6. As it was I should have looked in the pockets. Can't you imagine Mr. Downs coming home from work, hanging up his jacket and hat, and joining the family in the dining room for dinner?
Sorry if this is hard to follow, but the rest of these pictures were taken upstairs. The upstairs is in much better condition than the downstairs.any ideas why that is? The upstairs even has holes in the roof. Could it be because it is better ventilated? 7. Tattered curtains I love tattered curtains. I know the mask sucks, but it's what we had. We know for next time.
8.Great place to read I really liked the lighting in this picture. This was taken in the largest bedroom.
9.This bed is an ecosystem (awesome quote from my boyfriend) But really, there are little green sprouts in the middle. The only spot the ceiling is falling is right above the bed. I've never seen anything like it.
I don't want to post that many pictures, so I think I'll stop there. In the piles of clutter I found old mail envelopes. They date from 1924-1940 and are almost entirely comprised of letters, or "little missives" between C. Earl and Dorothy Downs. They're in pretty sloppy cursive, but I've gathered that he taught at Herscher High School and she taught music somewhere else. I have also found out that she died in the 50s and the house was abandoned in the mid 80's.

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store. |
