"Veda Land" Dream now just a Jaguar and a Boathouse

It's been more than a decade now since Doug Henning, the big-haired magician, and Maharishi Mahesh Yogi, the big-bearded founder of Transcendental Meditation, announced plans to build Maharishi Veda Land, a $1.5 billion, 1,400-acre New Age theme park near Niagara Falls, Ontario. Veda Land was supposed to haul in six million visitors a year with unique attractions like a ''Magic Flying Chariot Ride,'' a ''Corridor of Time Ride'' and something called ''the world's only levitating building.'' An attraction was even supposed to explore the molecular structure of a rose. Yet another prime example of novelty bullshit to enhance everyone's stay at Niagara!

Zoom to 1998, and Veda Land was just land: 700 acres or so of shrubs and junk a couple miles from the falls. Incidentally another theme park developer, Ancient Chinese City Development Corporation, even continued the petition to try and get permission from Niagara Falls City Hall to build on the same spot. An excerpt (on page 5) from the council meeting can be found here:

http://docs.niagar...11&page=129&dbid=0

(strangely enough, you can clearly read on page 4 that this portion of the council meeting was even preceded by a bomb threat that evacuated all of city hall. Coincidence? Hmmm... let's see: Niagara Falls residents have King Waldorf, Castle Dracula, Lego City, and a huge statue of Frankenstein holding a Burger King Whopper for shit-sakes. Do we need more tourist-trap questionable attractions?)

Tragically, Henning died of liver cancer in 2000.

Zoom even further ahead to this morning, 2012. After trolling Google Earth and seeing a possible abandonment or two out in the area once slotted for this lost vision, I took a hike to see what I could find: not much.

I remember reading about this in The Spec back when the plans were being kicked around. Kind of felt more like novelty / entertainment reading than something that would actually happen.

The "yogic flying" was accompanied by some goofy photos too.

Also, didn't Doug Henning want to build a bridge across Lake Ontario, or was that someone else?

The field it was sitting in had grass as tall as my head - I sadly couldn't get a good full-body shot at all.
