Listening Post Teufelsberg

Some more images from my last trip to Berlin. This was an NSA/British Cold War listening post ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Teufelsberg ) to eavesdrop on Soviet communications from the edge of West Berlin. The station was built on a hill formed of all the rubble from the destruction and clearing of bombed-out WWII era Berlin. Apparently there also used to be a ski slope on the hill.

The site is not very remote but the Germans are very good about following the "Verboten" signs. But there is a fair bit of graffiti. This would be an awesome place to sleep out on top of!

1. Office block over approach road.

2. Antenna towers over office block.

3. Smaller antenna tower.

4.

5. Graffiti

6. Door to nowhere!

7. Domes on the roof

8.

9. The Teufelsberg is at the edge of the Grunewald Forest.

10.

11. View north of the 3rd Reich-era Olympics stadium

12.

13.

14. Inside one of the office blocks. I barely explore these but there were multiple floors looking very much like an office building.

Found this link online of a 360d image from within one of the antenna domes:

There's also some great images on this page, especially of interior machinery, and also a good aerial overview shot of the site:

cheers,

Heres a few pics from my trip to Teufelsberg.

I cant say i can agree about people obeying the "Verboten" signs... this place and Spreepark are the two most busy areas to explore i have been to. Its a wonder they do not charge admission... Btw, best view point in town to see Berlin

perhaps its the ease of getting to those places, or the fun to be had while there. Either way, do not expect to be alone.

What other place did you check out in Berlin?

wow, those are some really amazing photographs!

It was funny, because when I went there, there were about 5 or 6 people hanging around outside the gate acting agitated about going over the fence... but they all followed us in. The site was big enough that we never saw anybody inside. I think if you got up into the highest tower with the radar dome, especially at night, that you could have a very nice and quiet evening. The acoustics in there were also really great.

I only had a week in Berlin. Went on a guided tour of an air raid shelter and checked out the above ground part of a flakturm used as a climbing wall (apparently the lower floors are still accessible to cavers), and saw that old DDR amusement park from the fence line along the Spree. I heard that it is somewhat open to tours now?

I wish I could have seen the DDR palast before they destroyed it.

May be going back there this summer. Can you recommend any interesting sites?

No, from a much smaller Pacific island and a US dependency.
