Preamble

We meet again fellow explorer.

You know how it works. Someone sends TCP/IP packets from their computer to the UER server in Toronto. Then you fellow explorer, choose to read that person's thread and those TCP/IP packets make their way from Toronto to your computer. The result is that you read the person's words, view the photographs and ideally a positive emotion is evoked within you. Those who appreciate the imagery might comment on said photographs, the boycotters remain silent. After a while the thread grows old and works its way down the list of threads into eternal archive. In time a new thread begins and the process repeats itself.

Today's thread is about Barber Paper Mill, a location that many have been to. On July 3,2012 Rock And Roll Freak along with Doom VS and myself visited here. In total it was approximately 22 hours of driving (round trip) over a three day period but well worth the time and money.

So now fellow explorer, here are the photos from this stop, just one of eight stops that day.

During this visit we heard the sounds of other people present. I thought it might have been fellow explorers until a few pre-teens walked into view. The young boys inquired what we were doing there so we explained to them a little about the hobby. Then, like the crowd scene from Technoviking, the youths began to follow us around the facility. We were successful in losing them for a while but when they began to throw large blocks of wood down onto the same floor as us, creating a lot of noise and potential safety concern, they were cautioned to keep quiet. I gathered that this is a popular spot with bored youths as we saw no less than 8-9 youths that day.

Barber Paper Mill

Barber Paper Mill - 1910

Hydro electric generating dam - 1930

Barber Paper Mill - 1908

In 1823 a descendant of the United Empire Loyalists by the name of George Kennedy purchased 200 acres of land upon. Mr. Kennedy constructed a woolen mill along the banks of the Credit River. A small settlement formed around the mill that took on the name of Hungry Hollow. The name was in reference to the difficult times that the settlers faced. The land was scarcely cleared, roads were poor and the area full of hungry wolves. For the first few years only two other people lived in Hungry Hollow: Marquis Goodenow and Sylvester Garrison

In the nearby settlement of Crook's Hollow lived a man named Joseph Barber and his family. The Barber family immigrated to Canada in 1822 where Joseph found work as a stonemason working for James Crooks.

The Barber sons gained experience working in nearby paper mills. The youngest and the eldest of the brothers worked in the woolen factory. The second worked in the paper-making business. The third worked in the mill-wright business.

In 1837, six years after the death of their father Joseph, the four Barber sons (Joseph, Robert, William, and James) left Crook's Hollow and moved to Hungry Hollow.

Relying upon their mill experience, the four brothers purchased a portion of George Kennedy's land and built a mill and metal foundry located south of Kennedy's mill.

By 1840 Hungry Hollow had grown to include John Sumpter's general store and Elijah Travis' planing mill. By 1842 there were two Inns, a tailor, shoemaker, carpenter and blacksmith. In 1844 a second general store opened operated by James Young. Philo Dayfoot opened a tannery and boot factory during that same year.

In 1843 the Barber mill had become successful enough that the brothers opened a second mill in the settlement of Streetsville.

Around 1853 the Barber brothers consolidated their two woolen mills in Georgetown due to failing water power. The new larger facility became known as Toronto Woolen Mills. At it's prime, the paper mill produced over 5000 pounds of paper for books and newspapers per day.

A fire in 1861 completely destroyed the Streetsville woolen mill and during that same year a boiler exploded in the paper mill at a loss of $8000.

By 1864 the population of Hungry Hollow had grown to approximately 1250 people.

In 1869 the Barber Brothers operation was dissolved. Joseph retired, Robert and William took over the Streetsville woolen mill and James took over sole operation of the Georgetown paper mill.

Upon James' death in 1880, his son John Roaf Barber took over the mill and changed the production to wood pulp. The wood pulp was used for a specialty newspaper known as Number 3, which sold for 5 cents per pound.

By the 1880's the Georgetown mill was requiring increased power to operate. To harness the power of the river a water dam was constructed with a twenty-four foot fall that was able to provide 175 horse power. John Roaf Barber hired the Brush Electric Company to create a 100-horsepower electric generator and a 60-horsepower DC motor. The generators were placed in the power house located 2.4 km downstream from the mill. Hydro electric power was transferred back to the mill by copper wire. This was the first mill of it's kind in Canada to generate electrical power for industrial production.

John Roaf continued operating the Barber Paper Mill under 1911 when he retired and sold the mill to the Provincial Paper Company who had mills in Thorold, Milleroches, and Port Arthur.

Provincial Paper was progressively shut down beginning on November 15, 1948 due to weakened financial markets. Production would eventually resume.

The Provincial Paper Company continued to operate until March 31st, 1991 when it was closed permanently.

Today the property is owned by Victor Boutin of Everlast Restoration. Mr. Boutin's plan is to convert the property into a country inn, fine-dining restaurant, and art studio. A 14 storey condominium is also to be built on the site. As of 2010 the developers had submitted their plans to the Town of Halton Hills.

Some Southern Ontario paranormal investigators believe the site to be haunted by the ghost of Robert Barber.

And now the time has come for us to part ways but we will meet again. Stay safe! Thanks to Doom VS and RnR for showing me around, it was fun!

Great write up Intrinsic, to hell with the boycotters, we're simply here to share stories, experiences and photos...and occasionally bust balls for fun!!

As I mentioned in a previous post - it was an exhausting and challenging day for Intrinsic, Doom vs and myself. By the time we made it to Barber the heat was at it's highest for the day. Doom gave us a great guided tour of the Barber grounds showing us all the best spots to see. Vanity was in full force with our selfies and group shots, but this place just begs for it.

It was fun (for a while) being followed and questioned by the kids enjoying the grounds that day, they even helped us with our group shot by the window - they even said we "look tough" haha. We had to set them straight though when they started dropping rocks, making noise and starting small fires - good thing Doom has a mean sounding voice!

It was great spending the day with two fellow explorers, sharing stories and picture ideas. For the 3 people who haven't yet been to the Barber Paper Mill, you really should go!!

Enjoy my pics!

Hahahahaha...mean sounding voice? Guess that comes from those whiskey drinking years and singing in a hardcore punk band lol. Yup, good day, good explore, great shots too, RnR! I really like the historic photos Intrinsic put up as well. We are gonna put that explore day to shame though soon...and feel like shit for two days after rather than one!

As this was a return trip for me to this dirty whore of a spot, I was happy to sit around and watch RnR and Intrinsic snap away for the most part. In between giving the band of preteen miscreants a primer on what we were doing and why we do it (as well as trying to persuade them to stop their destructive tomfoolery) I managed to snap off a dozen shots of things I had not documented last time.

I don't know what's more of a classic: the hairy balls riding the digital dinosaur, or "Here Lies My Virginity". Some absolute classic tagging art!

Haha! Yup, this time I went for some details as last time it was more about taking in the vast spaces. Some classic graf here. Love the 8-bit era jagged edges of the dino. But the dick cowboy? Must have been chewing blotters to get inspiration for that one.

Yea, it's basically like a playground. People also go there for professional photoshoots with models too. The only time I've ever not run into other people there was late at night.

The sign said "Anybody caught trespassin will be shot on sight"
So I jumped on the fence and I yelled at the house,
"Hey! What gives you the right?" http://www.flickr.com/photos/evman/
