|  | | | I hope that little quote from ‘The Burbs’ didn't mislead you as to the nature of this post, but I couldn’t resist. I’ll admit that this suburban adventure was on the tame end of the UE spectrum—the kind of exploring you can do in flip flops—but sometimes you gotta take what you can get. Mostly I was looking for an excuse to snap pictures during this “Golden Hour” I hear all the photogs talk about.
The family was searching for a grassy patch from which to view the fireworks they shoot off at the mall nearby, and I suggested this place I frequently pass by. It was a Calloway’s Nursery at one point, but the business moved across town a few years ago. I’ve always intended to stop and explore, but have hesitated now that construction equipment has shown up. This location is near a busy road and surrounded by apartments and businesses on all sides.
But on this glorious day I feel confident in my snooping. It is the one day out of the year that no one will find it suspicious that a person is toting a camera and wandering around the parking lot of a closed down business or under a bridge. People camp out early in parking lots, fields, etc., to get a good view of the annual Independence Day display. It was the perfect opportunity to do a little exploring while waiting for the sun to set and the bombs to begin bursting in air.
After we parked, I noticed a canal and a little bridge down the hill beckoning for me to come investigate it as well.
MacArthur Bridge

2. Graffiti says “Sur X3 (13)”. I see this tag all over my city—a Hispanic gang, I think. “King Country” has been sprayed over it. Never seen this tag before, some sort of rival Elvis gang, perhaps?
3. Spiderweb with spider = I'm trying to be artsy.
4. “I don’t ever wanna feel like I did that day. Take me to the place I love. Take me all the way.”
5. Whoa. That’s deep, man.
6. Guess no one cared a whole awful lot for this lil guy.
Now over the hill we go to the former Calloway’s Nursery:
7. Not using the term “abandoned”, because it’s not.
8. Apparently it’s being remodeled into a church of some kind.
9. “We don’t need no education…We don’t need no thought control…No dark sarcasm in the classroom….”
10. The unsettling way this light is dangling over the makeshift table and metal folding chairs makes it easy to imagine shady dealings going down in here, but it’s probably just where the construction workers eat their lunch.
