| | | “This school has been a haven of refuge to boys… [who were] overwhelmed by the forces of an unkind destiny. Many of these boys had their ideals and aspirations for noble living, but they did not have a fair chance” ~School Administrator, 1946 “Operations [sterilizations] have been performed for inmates of this school” ~ Eugenics Board, 1948 Ironically, the school was founded as a humane alternative to sentencing children to hard labor alongside adult criminals. In its early days, boys as young as 8 were sent to the school, living and working there for up to a year. My obsession with this place promises to be endless.
1. At its peak, 500 boys lived in the surrounding cottages.

14.
15. In the 1940s, school policy encouraged boys to “develop good church habits and an appreciation for wholesome religious literature”
16. "The majority of these boys are not going to be governors or presidents. We've got to teach them to make a living with their hands." ~someone who worked at the school for 48 years

19. Until the 70s or so, the school’s objective was to “have in each cottage one large family.” Thus, a married couple would live in a cottage with all the boys, and the female cooked, cleaned and “promoted a cooperative spirit among the boys… [and] set the standard for happy home life in the cottage”

| | | Damn, what a waste. That building could have been remodeled and re-purposed for a hundred other uses.
"The majority of these boys are not going to be governors or presidents. We've got to teach them to make a living with their hands." The truth hurts. But if anyone said that today they'd end up on the evening news and would be run out of town on rail.
The floor plan's freakin' neat.

The quote about the boys never being governors or presidents was found onsite, in a newspaper clipping that was lying on the floor. That quote bothers me. Most of the kids there were poor, and I hate the idea of only educating kids who had the magnificent luck of being born into wealthy or middle class families.

It's too bad that a lot of these buildings are filled with asbestos, so no one will buy them since its too much money/work to restore them.
