Really great set of pictures. Once-ler, the one of the bright circle and louvers underneath is really cool. Without numbers on them there are too many great ones to call out.

It seems you guys discovered a new life form.

That, my dear, is a stalagmite.

There must be a small/medium size drip above it.

Haha, some nice pics from the fiber plant...

I see you found some urban formations, I love those things. It normally takes thousands of years to form those, but the rust/concrete etc allow them to form really fast in abandonments.

The power plant is by far the most epic explore near Birmingham, except one certain hotel that is now locked up tight.

Looks like you guys found some very interesting things in the Fiber Plant. I wasn't so fortunate and was in a hurry when I explored it. I came for the power plant that day.

Do you know any history about the Fibre plant? Do you know when it was built/closed?

It seems to be a very bad superfund site with white powder sprayed everywhere.

Very nice set, even if it's not your considered best. Out of these, #3 and #14 are my favorite, so I for one totally support you taking pictures of dangerous things. Safety first! Sorta. Both pictures look like something from a noir film set.

I would probably be the first to poke that stalagmite. Just to check the melting illusion.

Looking forward to hearing the history on this one.

It was built in 1949, opened in 1950, and closed in mid 1971 after six years of losses due to the dropping price of rayon imports. The plant is currently for sale for $6 million.

EDIT : Contrary to popular belief, the fiber plant is not a superfund site.

Sorry Peach, fixed as per request. Mandias bushwhacked us, dragged us all back here beating everyone mercilessly until every last inch of that stack was clean. Hope yr happy ;) After the beatings Mandias turned us all loose to play so I came back with a fresh set of pics. Enjoy!

Well holy hell, this place looked so awesome I made a trip out a couple weeks ago and thought that there was just no security, gates were wide open to the main plant area! Went cruising around the side of the site to see a single wide trailer with a family living on the middle of the complex. Thought ok, some redneck squatters. Well lo and behold, we decided to drive away and park and on our way back a guy in a gator truck kept driving all over the place looking for us. We were running out of time (had been at Bham earlier that day it it was getting dark.) After a half hour of him not giving up we decided we'd just tell him we were doing some writing for a historical society for power plants. Needless to say he gave us the usual its posted he can't let us go in there and if he finds us we'll get prosecuted spill, was so disappointed. I guess maybe the owners let him live there as a groundskeeper. Just wanted to give the heads up for anyone else as stupid as I was making a grand entrance.

Sorry to hear about your trouble Atlanta_Ocatne, I never meant to give the impression that this place was just an easy access walkthrough. The active businesses here actually do give a shit and the Squidbilly family are there to protect. They all live there (how cool would that be growing up?) lots of kid toys in the yard and they seem to know the innards of the place well as evidenced by all the kiddie size sneaker prints throughout the building. What they don't know is that the wall that stands oh so perilously close to their single wide slice-o-heaven is hanging barely attached to the rest of the building. The six to eight inch gap between the brick wall and the rest of the support columns ranks it at the top of the structurally questionable structures I've visited. I would advise all to give this place lots of breathing room to cool off for the foreseeable future before visiting again. Just my 2c.

You didn't give the impression, I was just a bit too naive because the area was so rural. Just wanted to make sure nobody else made the same mistake!

Really interesting CaJun! Curious who the architect was for these - I have seen several from circa 1900-1920 with a very similar design. In fact, there is another plant like this 2 miles away on an active site - we almost made the mistake of trying to get into it thinking it was this one - looked just like this one.

Man, if you do that it would be awesome to see that stuff. I spent all day there studying how the plant took coal up the conveyor belt and than down different chutes into the grinders to be blown into the furnaces. From there the steam produced was routed to big electric generators and back out to cooling. I would kill just to see blueprints of how all this was engineered. Technology of the 1940s is absolutely beautiful to look at. However, if you couldn't tell from the pictures, its all covered with a healthy dusting of fine asbestos particles. Other than that, beautiful yes. Seriously though, PM me details if you get them.
