Loop 288's forgotten house

It's just a house, but this one actually was a really fun explore for me. I have the distinct bad taste in my mouth of being born and raised in the small town... All 23 years under my belt were spent in this one little shithole.

My town used to be a very small, clique "small town Texas" type of place, and out of nowhere right around 2000 it exploded and a HUGE amount of growth happened very quickly.

I have a LOT of memories of small, small town Denton, and it kind of weirds me out now as an adult on just how different things are here. For example, I remember huge, grassy rolling hills where longhorns and cattle would roam and graze, now it's a huge subdevelopment and a Wal Mart.

One of my strongest memories is of Loop 288, way back in the day. Loop 288 was a single lane road that looped all the way around Denton in a gorgeous, picturesque setting of grazing cattle and gently rolling hills, and at one point, nestled on top of a hill, set a beautiful little house, with a nice cedar facade on the front and a huge yard. I remember thinking, how great would it be to live there? In the country, but not isolated, all the freedom and open space in the world, but still only ten minutes from a Wal Mart? And in a pretty house to boot?

Sadly, Loop 288 was widened to three lanes in each direction and became a major highway through the area, and all the sub developments and retail centers and cluster fuck that is a city followed it, and quickly the quaint little house was surrounded, and understandably, quickly a for sale sign went up in front of it.

Well, suddenly, and by no fault of it's own, the house sits less than ten feet from a major highway, and the only way out of the driveway opens to said highway, and needless to say the appeal of the constant noise of the highway and having to dodge highway traffic every time you pulled in or out didn't really fancy most buyers, and the For Sale sign never came down again, and slowly, painfully the house sunk further and further into the downward spiral that all abandoned buildings do. I would always drive by that house and think of how I would love to live there, and remembered how nice it was, and over the years, started feeling bad for it, once so nice, now falling apart. I always wondered what it looked like inside, both in it's heyday and now. So, today, I took a little walk and stopped in. I'm glad I did.

1. The forgotton House

2. Another view

3. If my memory serves me, the garage was added around 1997.

4. The kitchen and living room were connected, with the dining room behind, giving the house a very unique layout that I really quite liked.

5. It seemed like EVERY GODDAMN PICTURE came out just ever so slightly out of focus.

6. I doubt this is where it originally was.

7. I enjoyed the look of the living room a lot. It was also UNBEARABLY hot in here, making me think even in it's half demolish state, it was very well insulated and probably really good on bills.

8. Unsuprisingly, copper thieves had beaten me to it.

9. The copper tieves really went all out on this poor place.

10. Another view of the general clutter in the living room.

11. There were just enough remnants of the previous tenants to make it delightfully depressing.

12. Ho hum. I like the color in this one.

13. Mirror in the bathroom... I LOVE this picture.

14. BUUUUUMMMMMMMMM CAAAAAAAAAAAAAMMMMMMMMMMPPPPPP

15. Aaaaand I'm out.

nice find!

When I say I'm 'clean and sober', it means I've showered and I'm headed to the liquor store.

I lived in Denton from '96-'01. I understand EXACTLY what you mean about the town going from rural virgin to suburban slut in the blink of an eye. Drove by this house many times myself and always thought it was a very unique one. Also in a very peculiar location being so close to a busy thoroughfare. Thanks for sharing!

It looks like a place, and in about the right location of a family that we used to go to church with as a kid. They used to have a few functions there. Could be wrong, but sure looks like it. So sad to see that place in that state of array.

Nice set Capt.

Good memory! There was a house very, very similar to this one that sat on the 35 service road right in front of Denton Regional. They caught a bunch of teens in there doin drugs and then demo'd it about 4 years ago. Nice place, but it was trashed inside
