May mine hunting

I had a free afternoon, so I thought I'd check out an old iron mining area that I hadn't been to before.

The hike in was about three miles, all uphill, until I reached the old narrow-gauge rail bed. This was where (a hundred years ago) mine carts carried the ore from the mines to an aerial tramway down the side of the mountain. Here's the rail bed now:

I knew I was getting close to the mines when I started finding rusty old wheelbarrows:

I started finding collapsed mine entrances, mostly. There were also a few spots where mine working had come too close to the surface, and part of the mine had caved in. Here's a caved-in section (looks like an entrance but it's not):

This is looking in that cave-in hole:

Eventually, I found some interesting surface mining:

And a NEAT mine entrance, where the ore was vertical:

I went in here - it started out with a long pool of deep water that I had to kinda chimney across (sorry no pictures, I was trying to not fall in). I soon crawled up to a decent room with a view back to a second entrance:

The ceiling here was only about 4' high, which sucks compared to the 6'+ mines I'm used to exploring. Here's looking out the second entrance:

And that entrance from the outside:

I hiked around a little bit more, found a few more collapsed entrance, and one more small accessible mine, before I had to head home. I'm sure there's stuff I missed - this vein of ore has two BIG mines further to the south, and there's always the chance of finding another good one.

edit: I almost forgot... here's the view from the mines... Beautiful!

How far are you from South Hill, VA? I want to learn this mine-hunting art. And see neat rocks. I miss geology.

I'm 3 hours away.

Bad news is I don't have much free time for exploring (family takes priority on the weekends). I'd like to be able to host a small mine exploring intro / get together before the end of the summer though.

I'd definitely like to join, if you have the inclination to invite a total stranger.

I'd love something like that as well. Mines are caves are some interests I'd like to develop more fully

leave any cocaine for the bats?

The nightmare corpse-city of R'lyeh…was built in measureless eons behind history by the vast, loathsome shapes that seeped down from the dark stars. There lay great Cthulhu and his hordes, hidden in green slimy vaults.
