I spent the last 40 hours enjoying a small northern IL town for all of it's documented history. The house I stayed in was built in 1888 (complete with hidden staircases!) I felt I was in an antique shop. Anyway, I got into the Starline building, which was built in 1883 as a manufacturer of hay carriers. Parts of it are being redone, and the plan is to redo the entire building (8 city blocks worth).
Most interesting tidbits:
- boiler room was turned into a greenhouse (Wonderful constructed battle between life and industry)
- most of the rooms are still filled with nonsensical objects that just seem to have been put into piles at random
- there are a few vaults with checks and papers in them dating back to when the building was built. I was too careful to touch them.

Has anybody else heard of Starline? I didn't explore the entire building.

I can't remember how I heard of it, probably some artist friends, but I just did a search on it... apparently they hold art exhibitions there and whatnot.

I didn't get any pictures and I regret that. I'll be going back soon enough, though. I'll post them. The guy who bought it does use a small section as an art studio. The main entrance is used for exhibitions sometimes.

I found this...

>>The Starline Gallery is a work in progress. The Starline building is over 100 years old and located at the __________________________________. It is in a very unique phase of renovation, where artist work spaces are available for rent, and premium exhibition space is available to resident artists. The building itself covers about three city blocks.

Tours of the gallery space or studios are available by appointment via the contact page.<<

“Somewhere the saving and putting away had to begin again and someone had to do the saving and the keeping, one way or another, in books, in records, in people’s heads, any way at all so long as it was safe, free from moths, silverfish, rust and dry-rot, and men with matches.”
