|  | | | Just happened across this the other day, appears to me it was a pedestrian underpass beneath highway 1. Thus far I have been unable to find the other end, I think this is a result of property development on the other side. I also have been unsuccessful in finding anything by Google research. Interesting little find, got me a bit sweaty looking for the other end to. Anyone familiar with this random tunnel?

Not 100% sure about the other end of that tunnel - I grew up in the area and vaguely remember seeing what looked like a sealed stairwell into the tunnel on the other side.
Don't think it was residential development that caused it to be de-commisionned though; they replaced that tunnel with a pedestrian overpass a block to the east.

| | | | Yeah you got it, as far as residential development, I was more referring to it swallowing up the other end. I bushwhacked a bit and ended up in some backyards but no dice on finding the other side. The entry in the photo is some 30 ft below the highway, but the neighborhood across the way is elevated above the highway, so a stairwell would make sense.

| | | | Don't know about the other portal, but it was a simple pedestrian crossing of the highway. A woman was attacked under there prompting the City Council of the day to close it down. This has come up before, I think there are some references to it online somewhere.

lol I dunno, only been a member 1 year, as my star states. It was fun though, gave me some excitement for a couple hours, they must have just graded over the opposite side portal.

I noticed this thing in March 2011, had no idea what it was, all I knew was that it was too dark to see the end and it was permanently sealed with thick iron bars that would require some pretty serious hardware (not to mention law breaking) to get around.
Anyway here's a photo I took with a telephoto lens shoved through the grate then cranked up in Photoshop back in 2011, below it is one I took a couple nights ago using my car's headlights to flood the tunnel with light.
To me it looks like there's either a wall or a second set of iron bars about 60 or so meters from the entrance. And no, I couldn't find the other end, although I have a good idea where it is/was. It's either been paved over is or is concealed behind some blackberry bushes.

| | | | the other side is a planter box with a tree at the bottom of the street, its more obvious when your there, and yes someone was attacked, they closed the tunnel and built the overpass
