Abandoned along the blue ridge parkway

Im a seasoned explorer/amateur photographer taking a solo trip in early september from eastern pennsylvania down to northeastern tennesse on my triumph motorcycle. i plan to ride the blue ridge parkway most of the way through virgina and into north carolina and jumping off near ashville NC and then to my destination near johnson city tn. Looking for some good abandonments along the way (i hope to find some of my own on the road) but if there are any "must see" ue places not too far off my ride i would love to know about them. And if anyone would like to meet up at any of these locations im always up for some company. Thank you, and i know we try and keep our locations quite secretive to keep the vandals out so please, if you have to give me some detailed instructions please PM me, and thanks again. -zerin

Well, if you follow it past Asheville to Cherokee NC and enter the Great Smoky Mountains National Park you can go to Elkmont TN, which is basically an entire abandoned town. I understand there are a few things on the park way, but will involve a bit of a hike. If I remember there is an abandoned crash site of an airplane but it is a hell of a hike in and out. Anyone else who can help this fella out?

A B-25 crashed near the Peaks of Otter in 1943, and there are (I believe) two crash sites near Humpback Rocks. I'm sure there are others.

I've been to the spot where Audie Murphy's plane crashed, but it's not on the Parkway. Nothing to see there anyways.

One of those, I can't remember. There are a lot of crash sites scattered around the Appalachians honestly. Some of the most remote areas on the east coast out here. Too much work to lug it all out, so there it stays.

I didnt look specifically where you were going, but where Blue Ridge turns into Skyline Drive by Waynesboro VA there is a boring little motel right off the highway with some mildly interesting bits. Might as well head into Staunton where there are some classics if you have the time

If you are talking about the old one I'm thinking about, it used to be used for National Guard and local police training.

You're not thinking about the one in Charlottesville are you?

They used to do urban combat training there.

No, the OLD Western State on the south end of Staunton.

I don't know about security; I've never had an issue there myself but I've only been once or twice so that doesn't mean much. But I can tell you that it is ridiculously overdone and not really that cool...

I've had run-ins, never any serious trouble. I used to live a few blocks away and would make it there about once a week for a month or two. Not that much to see other than "the" staircase and empty hallways

Yeah and were looking for a daylight explore and then something to stay at for the night... guess this is not the place... maybe someone knows something else around the stanton area that would be better suited for this?
