Hello all,
I am in the process of getting clearance to visit Nike Site Summit above Anchorage. I'm using a local politician as an intermediary between myself and the Joint Base and I can probably get a few extra folks in. This will be sometime in July or early August as the site is under about 8 feet of snow currently.

Unfortunately any visit to Site Summit is accompanied by a military liaison.

Anyone interested?

Also, I live outside of Denali Nat'l Park, so if anyone wants to meet up in Fairbanks it is an easy drive for me

Good to see another Alaska explorer on here! I've been to NSS a few times before security got ramped up. Really great place and it'd be nice to go back and see some of the recent restoration work.

I'm currently attending college in Fairbanks but will be home in Anchorage for the summer. I'd definitely be down for some exploration since I haven't gotten out in a while to do so. I bet you know of some decent places to check out in and around the Denali area. I've been to the old satellite station near Talkeetna before it got gutted and sealed, but that's about it and I'm sure there's much more in the area to see that I don't know about.

Will they let peeps take pictures? That is the question. Or will it be like "Here is the entry, but we can't go in because it is unsafe! LOL"

Having been in a few abandoned NIKE sites, I think you'll be disappointed. There is usually not much to see, since the Army used outside contractors to completely scrap and dismantle anything of value from the sites. That included a clean up of the site...

But have fun, that's what it's about.

Most Nike sites have been demolished or blocked off in some way. Site Summit is still more or less completely intact. There are a few sites up on Joint-Base Wainwright that are in o.k. condition and I'm sure there are some down on Elmendorf but I spend little time in Anchorage so I am not sure. Site Summit is in the best shape of any surviving Nike batteries because it is so remote and still on base.

Summit is in much better shape than the typical Nike site in the lower 48. It's also different design, the Alaska Nike sites had aboveground missile garages rather than underground bunkers.

When I was last up there in 2003, the only real damage seemed to be from training exercises rather than vandals.

And some of the other AK sites (worse condition):

westarttodrift, good to see another Alaskan explorer! I haven't been up there for a while, but I do like to see new photos and hear about people doing stuff! Shoot me a PM if you need any info on stuff. There's some semi ghost-town areas over by Healy, and an abandoned AKRR spur up to Suntrana. Might be some abandoned coal mines around there, but they can be pretty dangerous. The Windy bridge is fun to climb around on too: http://drainfreak.com/df/windy/

Hey! Windy Bridge is always fun. There are a ton of old homesteader sites around Denali as well as the old Healy town site. Then south of Cantwell is the huge Igloo. Inside the park there is the old copper claim cabin across the drainage from the Eilson Visitor Center. I have a friend who is a bush pilot and we might try and fly out to the Aleutians to Attu and Kiska.

I would be so jealous if you make it to Attu and Kiska, I never got out that far. I'm sure there would be multiple people willing to chip in gas money and do a trip out there.

I've heard the igloo owner will let you look around if you ask him, I think he has the gas station nearby... that was a couple years ago though, it could have changed hands.

That gas station has been closed for years, and you can just walk into the Igloo. I'm sure the guy isn't super happy to have people poking around, but I have personally never had any run-ins with the owner or AK troopers.

soooo... any update on a Summit visit? It's on my list of must see places up here. I'm close by, based in Wasilla, and will definitely be interested in coming along. Please.

Same here. I'd be down as well. Been a while since I've been there and I'd like to see the restoration progress.
