whats sad is that when there is a heritage house on a property and the developers want it to be demo'd there's always a case of "arson". I remember a few years back (2007 or 2008ish) there were 2 houses in Oak Ridges (Richmond Hill) where I lived that were heritage houses and the developers wanted to build on the land and in one night both houses went up in flames! coincidence? I don't think so

I was driving by there yesterday and saw the Minto signs up. This house is one I haven't gone to as up until recently it was occupied. By far this is the most beautiful Windfields home, IMO.

goes on everywhere. they did that with the moulin rouge here. I believe it was finally 3rd times the charm, in conjunction with the fire department. barely had the ashes cooled and the fire department dragged in a crane and started ripping it to pieces, citing "we need to get rid of the hot spots" sure... why every day I see removing hot spots involving completely ripping buildings down to their concrete pad!

Anytime something magically goes up in flames here, it's always blamed on kids with fireworks, or homeless people. Rarely is either the actual truth

I agree, there was a recent article about just that. The building caught on fire and the whole place was demo'd siting "safety issues" they blamed kids for starting the fire, but alot of us know better

Even without "arson", nothing's really stopping developers from demolishing heritage buildings, unfortunately. Even if the building's designated under the Ontario Heritage Act, there isn't much a municipality can do once the building is torn down. Sigh. We totally need to strengthen our heritage laws; set steep fines for developers who allow heritage buildings on their properties to burn down or get demolished. Even if a fire is set by arsonists (highly unlikely), blame should still rest on the property's owner for not properly protecting the building from such intruders.

Aaaaannnddd....I'll step off my soapbox now, lol.

Who do you suggest pays for all of that added protection?

Also, what about when it starts collapsing on itself? Does the property owner get fined for that as well, for not going in and shoring it up or "maintaining" it?

Can it be maintained with modern supplies or does it have to keep its authenticity by trying to mimic supplies from when it was built?

I assume that people should be able to see these buildings, despite what state they're in, but who gets sued when someone breaks a leg on the property?

Just wondering.

Give a person a match and they'll be warm for a minute, but light them on fire and they'll be warm for the rest of their life. =)

If anyone wants a group tour and history lesson of Winfield's I worked there several years. I've done a few covert tours for reporters and an author. Always love touring that place.
