Air Force Base

This Air Force Base began as an Army Air Field and was the first basic flying training school to become operational after the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor in 1941. The airfield was officially activated in September 1941 by the Army Air Forces Training Command, Gulf Coast Training Center. It was placed under the jurisdiction of the Army Air Corps Pilot School. The mission of the new airfield was the training of aviation cadets in the basic phase of flying training.

In 1943 the training aircraft used at the Field included approximately 250 BT-13's and AT-6's, with approximately 2500 enlisted men, 300 officers and 550 maintenance personnel. Pilot cadet classes numbered between 300 and 400 students. The Field hosted a Flying Training Wing from September 1943 to October 1945, graduating over 10,000 pilots, including cadets from Brazil, Mexico, Guatemala, the Philippines, and Ecuador. The airfield also maintained a branch prisoner-of-war camp, holding about 200 German POWs.

Basic pilot training was discontinued at the base in late 1945, and the base was deactivated in November 1946. It became a storage facility for aircraft and other equipment, such as tractors and bulldozers. In 1948, The Field was reactivated under the newly established United States Air Force. It resumed basic single-engine pilot training under the Air Training Command.

In July of 1952, it was designated a permanent Air Force installation and its name officially changed. It was transformed to crew training role for all-weather fighter interceptors and longer 8000 and 9,000-foot runways were built to accommodate the T-33 Shooting Star and F-86 Sabre that arrived in late 1952.

In July 1962, the base was transferred from ATC to the Air Defense Command and they started training in the F-102 and TF-102 Delta Dagger. From 1962 to 1971, the base had the largest fleet of F-102s in the U.S. Air Force and became the only F-102 replacement training base within the Air Defense Command.

The school trained and graduated over 11,000 aircrew members including forty-nine United States astronauts, several USAF F-102s having been bailed to the National Aeronautics and Space Administration for astronaut proficiency training at the NASA Flight Operations Facility at Ellington AFB near Houston. The base was officially closed in June 1971 due mainly to a change in pilot training requirements and retirement of the F-102 from front-line service.

Building #6 - crime scene barracks - we found a photo album on the first floor. Then a bloody bra and weird photo collage on the 3erd floor. The collage had a photo of one of the guys in the photo album {upper left corner in the photo album and the one marked "rapist" on the collage}. There was also a room on the 3erd floor that had a air conditioner set up and going full blast. It looked like someone was living in the room. we figured that they would be back soon so we cut it short and left before we ran into them.

no, just the normal stuff. Questions like "what are you doing here" and the classic "do you know youre trespassing?" but after running our id's they just sent us on our way.

It's good to be back. I'm gradually starting to feel human again, so hopefully the major health problems are behind me for now. Maybe I can get in a few crappy easy explores once in a while, and bitch about you damn kids.

Decomm bases are fun, unfortunately they tend to be in very poor condition if standing at all.

Thanks for sharing, it's a rapidly disappearing part of our recent history.
