Weird railroad building

So I'm cruising down the Cimmaron turnpike and take the Hallet exit. Just as I'm about to reach to toll booth, I happen to look down from the overpass and see the top of the strange little building in the growth near the railroad tracks. It appeared abandoned and even though I've driven through this toll booth over a hundred times, I never noticed it before. After I took the exit I could see the remains of the old highway predating the turnpike that parallelled the tracks, so I pulled off, grabbed my camera, and headed down the track.

Hallet was originally a train town in the early 1900's as two tracks crossed here. It also had a couple of oil booms, once around 1909 and again in the 1920s. The building was not in the town "proper", but just to the south.

The structure was almost up to the tracks and being built of solid concrete, gave a fortress like impression. From the roof materials and use of pipe hand rails, I'd guess early 1920s construction. It was two stories with an external walk way and a trap door on the inside.

The concrete strong box outside was interesting, if perplexing, and the small bomb looking things on the shelf left me clueless as well. I can't even hazard a guess to it's purpose, so if any train buffs have any ideas.....

Great pix!
First time I have ever seen a 'concrete' locking box.

I wonder if this could have been a switch control house like the one in
Fort Worth.

Looks like a very old switch/dispatch cabinet.

These were used way before the advent of these new-fangled digital singalling systems and controls ;)

Ah, that would explain the "lookout" configuration at the top. There's only a single BNSF line going through now, this must have been where the lines crossed. I need to drag out old maps.

Interlocking tower possibly? http://abandonedrails.com/towers.aspx
