Birmingham mourns a tragic and immense loss

Eulogy:
Twas a lesser known, and even lesser explored gem of Birmingham. In years it stood in silence, and in silence, with no warning it fell. Wiped from the face of the earth with out a trace. For no explainable reason other than that unexplainable human desire of those in power to destroy their own history to make room for not progress, but regression, to destroy beauty and replace it with featureless waste. A structure built to last decades if not centuries, destroyed to be replaced by either an empty lot or a building no more sturdy than a tin foil shack. May humanity someday weep at its hecatomb. May Chicago Bridge and Iron always be remembered.

It is listed in the database as Steward Machine Co, although that is actually the name of the active site that shares the same property. An inside picture is below. Naaman and I hit it briefly it right around the time the status went from vacant/for sale to purchased. When I contacted the new owners (who denied permission to explore) they gave me an indication that it would be re-purposed and not demolished. All vile lies. This is also the same place that some members here got robbed at knife point while trying to explore. Other then that, I really don't know that this place ever had a proper in depth explore and documentation. I'd drive by occasionally and nothing ever changed there, and then out the blue it is completely gone. I almost cried when I saw the immense vacant space. It really sucks when something is sitting there and you keep putting off exploring it, thinking it will still be there tomorrow. I'm taking this pretty hard.

The fence was once in so poor condition I drove my truck right inside the building... but then got scared about getting a flat and being murdered.

I'll be damned if that's not the truth, brother. Felt that pain many a time.

I loved this place. So sad to see it go.

Did you go here? This is not the same as the place in Bessemer. This is the place near the airport where we traipsed around in a creek looking for a drain entrance.
