|  | | | Someone approached me about a few of my photos, and wanted to discuss putting them up in a gallery she helps run. They were pretty specific about liking the industrial-type decay shots, and more specifically the geometric, architectural type shots with true verticals that look perpendicularly into a space. I'm an architecture student and this style is sort of how my eye is trained to see and remember spaces.. but I've had no training in photography. These are the ones I have so far, and was going to shoot a few more over the next few weeks. I've never had anything in a gallery before, so any input at all would be appreciated!
Should any of these be left out? Should I shoot them again and try something different? Thanks for any input I can use the next time I'm shooting, and for any tips from any of you who have submitted a portfolio to a gallery before.
* On a side note, I have cropped/re-sized versions of all these that fit standard print sizes, so I can mat and frame them much more easily and quickly. To me, they don't seem to be too different, and if people haven't ever seen the custom sizes, they'd never know the difference. Should I go with those prints, or get custom sizes and frames?

I would leave out the MCS shot and the subway shot.
I think #1 needs to be cropped a little more to remove the left edge lighter area.
I really like the icey blue of #7 in contrast with the others.
Otherwise, I think this is a fine set.

| | | | 5 and 8 don't really fit in. A few of them also suffer from a bit of barrel distortion. Running them through something like PTLens should help straighten things out a little.
Otherwise it looks like a solid enough set.

| | | | The fringing on the skylight frames in #1 drive me insane, and would piss me off even more in print format. If you shot these in raw, fix that in the conversion. If not, desaturate those areas so that it's just highlight fringe and not so blue. Micro's right about the barrel distortion, and if you're fixing that, a few of these seem to be either rotated a fraction of a degree clockwise, or you've got slightly converging horizontals that, because of the care taken to avoid converging lines, are fairly out of place.
Ditch the subway and the b/w shot, and put 6 and 7 near the top (or closest to the door in a gallery setting), I think they're your strongest images by far. 1 and 4 are also nice once you fix the fringing.

Looks like there's a consensus about the shots that don't belong. Thanks for the tip about PTLens, I had been correcting the distortion by cropping and Photoshop (perspective/distort/warp tools).
I will fix the fringing as well, I didn't know there as a Photoshop feature that did it.. I shoot and edit in RAW but guess I never dove that deep into it. A quick Google gave me a how to guide!

| | | | you might want to try some fine art paper for digital inkjet prints for some of these shots. Hahnemuhle makes some excellent german etching paper that has a good weight to it and would hold some of the colors nicely while accentuating the glow you get with hdr in a way that isn't cheesy (like in photo glossy). If you want something closer to photo paper, you can try the Museo silver rag, that paper is damn sexy.

In my experience if i want to show 10 images in a show i'll print 20, im always suprised how fast a images i was iffy about becomes a new fave or how quickly one i love gets tossed out of the mix when i see them in front of me.
Paper choice is key too as is glass and the lighting used at the gallery.
A image can look very different in matte vs gloss, to me it effects the whole mood of the piece....And if a place has really powerful little spot lights its often hard to get away with cheaper glass (too reflective) but if the light is even in the place you dont need to shell out for the expensive museum glass.

| | | | Congrats on the gallery request! I agree with the previous comments, crop the lighter edge on the left in the first. I kinda dig the subway shot. The two shadows are distracting but inevitable (be kinda cool if you were spiderman and could escape the area before a shot). I would exclude the B&W, as well.

| | | | Congrats on the galley gig! I have sold some prints in the past and I was very disappointed with my prints because my monitor was not calibrated. The colors were washed out and didn't look anything like what I had on my monitor. I would check out some monitor calibration software like the spyder3 or the Huey pro.
I'm not a pro and would recommend researching about this online.

That is a awesome shot! I believe I was in the same tunnel that wasn't closed, but didn't have a powerful spotlight to get a decent shot like that.

Thanks! Yeah, that was the open tunnel, and if I recall that show wasn't with a spotlight, it was just a few steps in on a bright, sunny winter day so the sun was pretty low and coming into the tunnel pretty deeply.

The gallery put up 1 and 4, but didn't want to go with a full show because they thought it didn't mend well with their resident artists stuff. Lately I've been too busy with work to try and put anything else together, but have had some of the photos up in a few local places along side UERer's seicer and Gordon Bombay.
