Fine, you're a fantastic driver but one who is close minded enough to think winter tires are a scam. Go to a winter rally. See how many cars are using all season tires.

Im mixed about the thing, I enjoy driving it but I really dont see why it needs a 6 speed tranny, its also slow as hell, and Im really not used to being so high and bouncy, I prefer lowered and stiff

All everyone acting like they are the Stig aside, lets be serious here. Winter tires are actually a good investment in heavy winter climates for most cars and special applications like rally racing. BUT and this is a strong but too, with a decent all-season tire, an experienced driver can do just fine in your average winter suburban areas. Most cars, the factory installed OEM tires are the cheapest all-seasons and as we know, most drivers are idiots and stick with them until they drive them bald THEN get new tires, which can take a while to happen. Any new car I would buy, I would pay for a new set of better all-seasons as there is some that work excellently in snowy roads and ice roads. Personally, I don't like having to switch off my tires twice a year so I prefer all-terrain tires which are M+S rated.

am i racing a fucking rally car? No. I'm going back and forth to work or the market or some other banal errand. if i was rocking a rally back and forth to work, I would consider a tire for rallying winter conditions, since I am not, oh well.

As far as winter rubber goes, out here in the Wild West where it's cold as fuck, all seasons will give sh*t performance in winter. Soft flexible rubber wins all day long. 25 years in Ontario.... all seasons will work in the winter climate but there is no substitute for a good snow tire. I don't care how good your skills are, the laws of physics don't change.

never had a problem with that and I run 215-60-14 BF Goodrich Radial T/A's all year round. I also have the anti-lock brakes disconnected.

Here's the Bullshit part of winter tires, as far as stopping distance goes. For a tire to earn the mountain snowflake symbol indicating a winter performing tire (atleast in canada - assume it's the same in the USA) it only has to stop 10% faster then an all season tire without the rating. I do not know what the actual measurements are as far as the distance required are. There is a control tire that sets the standard, and then they measure the winter tire against it. Lots of tires exceed that standard, but the bare minimum to get in is pathetic.

Transport Canada follows US DOT tire specs for the most part so you are correct. Whats intersting in a lot of these tire tests you see on hockey rinks, winter tires will always win because the ice is perfect. In reality, ice isn't that perfect and thats where studded tires and all-terrain tires do better because of the mixed eniviroment. If stopping is an issue, then actually chains on all 4 tires is better than winter tires.
