Is there anyone from Alaska on this board? I saw an interesting program on the History channel about the Japaneese capture of a few of the Aleutian islands. There are some old ruins and a runway and plenty of bomb craters. It would make quite a photo op! Anyone know any more than this?

Freak is in Alaska, and i've talked to him about some of those before. You might want to PM him...

I knew I forgot someone when I added a bunch of people...

Hey guys, thanks for adding me to the board DN. null_recipie: I haven't been out to the Aleutains yet, but it's one of my long-term goals There are indeed a LOT of ruins left by both sides during the war, bunkers, airfields, wrecked planes and tanks, beached Japanese submarines and sunken ships, big cannons, and pits of unexploded ordnance (one reason why it's hard to get permission to visit some of the islands). There are a few websites on Alaskan WWII history that mention the Aleutians, but if you want to see some good before and after pictures, the best sources are the several books that have been published on the subject. "The Forgotten War" gives a good overview of military activitiy in the area, from the Japanese invasion to the construction of the highway to eventual bombing missions against Japan from the recaptured islands. There's also a periodical called Alaska Geographic, which might show up in bookstores on the west coast, and has an issue devoted to photos and details of the islands. If I ever get out there I'll make sure to see as much as possible, and document it all!

Hi Freak, I just sent you a pm inviting you to join the board and then I check it and you are already a member, so please forgive the belated invitation! Good to see you here and I definately enjoyed your pictures from Alaska! More please! The History Channel has had a couple of halfway decent programs on the Aleutians however they tend to mainly give the story and not much in the way of pictures and film footage.

I'll have more photos on my site when I get back from OPX, I did some exploring on the way here (in Minneapolis now).

The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible to live without breaking laws." |
