Extracting broken keys?
< on 10/20/2011 6:59 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
Part of my key is stuck in the ignition of my Volvo 240. I have tried to use Micro screwdrivers, thin knives, hacksaw blades, and tweezers to get the key out.

Is there some secret method y'all know of, or should I give up and call a mobile locksmith?

P.S. Magnets will not work, and I'm not "using a drop of epoxy" like a few friends have suggested.

you're probably going to have to take the ignition cylinder out of the steering column and extract it on a bench. Sorry.
you're right not to try the epoxy 'trick'... you'll be in a pickle if that gets into the works of that ignition!

I have a thing for that...it's usually part of a good lockpick set, locksmiths can extract keys using a sawtooth pick. I have one...southord or Southern Ordnance has a wide selection of the picks for key extraction.

might be easier in the long run, you could try this:

You might be able to make one.

One guy suggested a coping saw blade.

I'd try that.

Use a dental pick, or blow compressed air into any hole you find. I popped a key out of a house deadbolt with compressed air.

Thanks for all the advice. i've now added dental picks, paper clips, bobby pins, and an unbent fishing hook to my list of attempts. i think I'll have to drop the $100 on a mobile locksmith.

At this point, I figure the outer pins have dropped around the key fragment, holding it inside like a key baby inside of an ignition womb.

Sorry I don't live near you...I have the locksmith's tools and I'd do it for free.

It's a hobby, a weird hobby, but a hobby.

It's just a matter of getting a pick up between the pins and the teeth of the key...usually it's easy enough with the right pick.

If you can wait, Southord should send you a pick without checking credentials.
