Towing capacity
< on 9/16/2011 7:31 PM >
Posted on Forum: UER ForumQuote
Hey car people !

I'm thinking about buying an ATV but I want to be sure that I can actually tow it with my car. The thing is that the owner's manual doesn't say anything about towing a load or the maximum towing capacity. I've searched the web without any success..

The car is a B200 Turbo with the automatic CVT.

So can anyone tell me:
1- Can I tow something with the car (I know I will have to add a trailer hitch)
2- If so, then what is the maximum weight that can be towed.

I don't feel like buying a pickup just to tow the ATV...

Thanks !

interesting the timing of this thread... i was thinking of getting a little trailer for my ATV's and putting a hitch on the Beretta. According to GM, the car will pull up to 1000lbs. But I have one question: What the hell is tongue weight? (And no smart ass answers please)

Tongue weight is the weight the trailer exerts on the hitch. think of the trailer as a lever and the wheels are the fulcrum. The tongue is what sticks out that goes over the ball hitch.

If you have too much cargo in the back of the trailer, and the tongue pulls up and you have too little, or negative, tongue weight. Conversely, too much cargo too close to the tongue results in the tongue pushing down, or too much tongue weight.

In other words, how much does your trailer push down or pull up your back bumper?

It's reasonably easy to fix (move shit in the trailer) and makes a huge difference in hauling over any major distance.

Oh, and Mick - supposedly a b200 can tow about 1300kg on a braked trailer, or ~400kg unbraked, but that seems a bit high to me. A small trailer and a small to medium ATV will run you about 500lbs (maybe 250kg?)

I'm just worried that the CVT will run fast (and hot), or will slip the belts, so avoid hills i guess?

I would not tow with a CVT. Not yet. They got a few more years to get em perfect for just moving a car around. Sam, your 'retta will tow that much fine, just make sure to check for rust issues where the hitch mounts. tongue weight was as described (perfectly I might add ) above. My suggestion? If it's possible buy a beater pick up for $600 and move the 4 wheeler around with that. Gotta be cheaper than a CVT rebuild when they nitpick a reason to deny the warranty claim due to "abuse".

In all seriousness I wouldn't tow with a CVT for that exact reason. If I absolutely had to, I wouldn't tow any more than 500lbs.

Aisin apparently is working on a 6 speed CVT for use in trucks; I would trust them in getting it right.

threadjacking a little, but the guy next door has a 99 Dakota 4x2 shortbox, standard cab he wants to trade for my little 05 Bayou 250. The downside is the pigtail for the downstream 02 sensor is slagged, needs a battery, tires and the brakes are probably garbage from sitting for over a year.

Advice?

I did a quick check through some of my catalogues and I do not see a listing for a hitch for the B200

Take it...the pigtail for the O2 sensor is an easy fix. You can do a whole brake job on the Dakota for about 150 in parts.

Take it. Decent engine, and not the die every year automatic. Yeah, I would do that swap all day long.

This is of course assuming the clutch is good and the rods aren't trying to get out the pan. And that the frame is mostly on piece.
