When its actually my car. So i have to drive me 2001 aveo5 (hatch) now since my fit tried to ken block off a barrier. but for some reason as soon i get going it starts this weird noise like a helicopter. and it just gets louder and louder and now its getting so loud its hurting my ears (and its amplified by the hatch design) lol its coming from the engine dead center. im not the best (yet =[) when it comes to cars. so any ideas as to what it is? its not so much a problem as the car runs fine. its just annoying as fuck and gives me headaches having to listen to it 40mins to and 40 back from school. since it sounds like a rotation (helicopter blades)it makes me think it could be a few things.

An exhaust leak is possible. I think that particular car also has cam sensors that go out, but they sound more like metal-metal contact coming from the motor, not a whoosh whoosh like blades would make.
PM me if you want to get join our board and get fit! |

Being an Aveo, it's probably your front wheel bearings. They don't last very long in them... parts are fairly cheap but it's a press-in type so labour is a bit pricey.

its coming from the front but its so loud i just sounds like its the engine itself. its like a puttering sound then as i go faster it sounds like a chopper then if i go over 65 it seems to even out where it sounds like metal on metal. ill have it checked by a friend just in case

So is this noise happening when the car isn't moving, too?

Jack the front end off the ground, run it thru the gears and see what it sounds like. Have somebody stand and watch and listen. Does a wheel hop, does anything smoke, is a rod bangin' around? Has it overheated lately, is it low on power?

I agree with Bandi. It is probably the front wheel bearings. I have had to replace them in the past and prior to replacement the noise was unbelievable.
Modify - Get the car to a shop soon. If the bearings seize your costs go up.
