Allison at the Buffalo Central Terminal

Last week, I finally had a chance to do an organized photo shoot. It was the first for both my friend Allison and I. She's a little self-conscious, so she wanted it to be in a place where others wouldn't be watching. The baggage area of the Buffalo Central Terminal seemed to be a good fit, and I think that the shoot went well. Here are some of the shots:

This location has super potential for an amazing model shoot, but your model was super awkward in the pictures. If she is that self conscious... she probably shouldn't model :/ She is obviously tense in each shot and just does not look comfortable at all.. in fact, I kind of feel bad for her looking at the pics. Nothing wrong on your part or anything, but she may want to get a little more self confidence and try again.

Thanks for the feedback. This was the first time that either of us had done a planned shoot, and it was done on short notice, and we didn't have as much time as we'd have liked, because she had to get home to go to a movie with another friend, so all of those might have contributed to any awkwardness that's evident in the photos. I'm sure that she'll be more comfortable with herself during the next shoot, and I'll be able to direct her better, and we'll have more time.

One of the hardest things to learn as a model photographer is the ability to direct a model. Especially if it's an experienced model and you aren't that experienced in model photography. You def have to build the confidence, but with time this will come. I remember when I started out I was almost scared, but thank God I worked with some wonderful girls.

Also, when it comes to wardrobe, think of your location... for instance, in this set, I might have gone with some torn up jeans and a tanktop on the girl or something with a little more attitude.

Oh, one other thing I just remembered... think about your angles when you shoot. You can tell you are obviously much taller than this girl, and you are shooting from your normal height. Get down to her height to make the picture level, or get down a bit lower and shoot slightly upwards toward her to make her appear taller. If you shoot from above, make sure it is a lot higher than her to get a good back ground. And lastly, use your rule of thirds. If you center your model in the shot, make sure there isn't too much foreground/background that is going to take away from her. Otherwise, offset the picture... here are some examples:

Eye level with model: (This girl is seriously short... like 4 ft nothin)

Upward Angle:

Downward Angle: (Different girl, obviously)

Rule of Thirds:

Hope these tips help a bit.

I'd also agree that the wardrobe doesn't quite fit the scenery. One thing I used to do, and still do, when I started out, was just try and copy other peoples work. Use their poses and angles and you'll start to learn how and why things are done/shot the way they are. It's helped me a lot with location shooting, but it also helps that I work with several ladies with a lot of experience and confidence.

The best advice I can give anyone, is to just keep shooting. Everyone always asks me for tips and stuff, but all I can really do is tell them is the basics and to just keep shooting. Practice makes perfect!

Guys, thanks for the advice. The outfit was her choice. We were originally going to do two outfits for the shoot, the other a little edgier/sexier, but like I mentioned, we had less time than we'd wanted. Personally, I think that 1 and 2 worked, though maybe not as well as they could have, e.g. too much foreground in 1, because the idea was that she was waiting for a train that was never going to arrive, and those were almost as much about the location as they were about her. I do get what you're saying about the height, which is why I tried getting some shots from the track level. Unfortunately, none of them came out particularly well, hence why I haven't posted them. I thought about doing some of the shots while down on a knee, but didn't think that it was necessary. In retrospect, I should have tried it. I also thought about the rule of thirds, but not until I reviewed the photos a couple of days afterward.

I'll keep these things in mind during the next shoot, and I'll run it by her and see what she thinks. Thank you again.
