Involved in a accident on July 1.

I was traveling on a road beside a local hospital. I was only going about 23mph (speed limit is 25mph and this was during 5 o'clock traffic). A older lady (probably in her seventies) pulled right out in front of me. She was making a left out of the hospital parking lot, but she was looking to the right ( I saw the back of her head when she pulled out).

I slammed on the brakes but it was far too late to avoid the collision. My car skidded a little bit and nailed her in the driver's side, rear door. No injuries to either of us. She was found at fault (obviously) and didn't try to get out it. Her insurance company is fully cooperating as well.

My old Buick has very little damage. It's actually hard to see it. A few cracks in the piece that goes around the headlights and grill, and the passenger, front fender is bowed out a tiny bit. Her Kia was fucked! Her rear door was crushed like a aluminum can and her drivers door had to be forced open. I'm sure there is more damage underneath.

Reaffirmation of an old lesson already learned - Old cars are strong as a mofo.

New lesson learned - Never, ever buy any type of Kia!

Newer cars are designed to crumple like a soda can. Something about dissipating the force of the crash or something...

I still think I'd rather be in an old school tank vs something that'll fold in a stiff breeze.

i shop the surplus auctions for stuff, you would be surprised, our quebec police force uses impalas, chargers and vickies. you can see a vickie that looks torn up , rolled 4 times and sold with a rebuild title, meanwhile a decent looking damaged impala is sold parts only! the vickie has a body on frame, its not going anywhere! the impala has uni body, you nick it the wrong way and the body twists its a writeoff

I get into this argument with my girlfriend all the time...She's got an 05 Kia Optima and tells me part of the reason she doesn't like my car is because "it's old and unsafe."

I drive a 96 Grand Marquis, for Christ's sake. Sherman could use my car to march on Atlanta.

Glad to hear you, her, and your car are alright.

I got rear ended by a Kia earlier this year. Totaled the Kia. My Dakota had a bent bumper and there was a little damage to the back of the cab where the bed hit it.

I had a 2008(ish?) CTS Caddy with dealer plates rear end the '92 toyota pickup in fall of 07. The toyota didn't even get a scratch but it fucking crumpled his bumper. He didn't want to pull over and discuss it though, he just gave me the "ok" sign and waved me on; obviously unable to see his bumper. I didn't care, truck was a POS and he was at fault, so I went with his call.

You can drive a piece of shit old school tank and get shitty mileage, or you can drive a piece of shit new tin can and get great gas mileage.

I live in a day and time where its laughable to drive an old people car, so i for the life of me, cannot understand why some of you young guys on here do. Also, just because its the only thing you can afford because grandma passed it down to you, doesnt mean its a good car for crying out loud. GM made some of the worst cars, and it seems like thats all that northeast people drive. Maybe its because NE is closer to Detroit, i dunno, but im glad people here tend to enjoy variety and have a little taste

On average: the pickup got ~35MPG; my car gets ~28MPG.

The reason so many people drive domestic cars is because they are abundant and the resale on imports is inflated. It's a lot harder to find a civic for under $2000 than a Neon or Cavalier. Last I checked people were still expecting four figures for a late 90's model civic or accord.

Nobody passed my car down to me...I went out looking for one. New cars feel like soulless appliances to me.

True. My friend rear-ended a cavalier last year. The driver decided to slam on the brakes on a yellow light.

The cavalier was totaled.

My friend's 1986 Chevy got a dent on the bumper and a cracked headlight...
