I got my Tragus piercing re-done (had semi closed up) yesterday and temporarily lost my hearing in that ear, woke up in the night with a terrible earache, was wondering if anyone else may have had these complications arise after this piercing, or if they may be unrelated? The area is sore (to be expected) but not infected, and cleansed as instructed with soap and water. Ideas what may have caused this? (When I got the original piercing done 10 years ago I had no issues whatsoever)

man, i havent heard of hearing loss. how did they pierce it? i assume they did it by hand with a needle. i suppose it's possible that your ear thought something was in it and maybe caused a wax build up? or some sort of fluid in your ear from washing it? i would definitely look into getting a pair of these: http://www.amazon....x-Pk/dp/B00028MSA0 and make sure your ear canals are free from obstructions.

I hope that's a joke... Ear candles don't work, and can be dangerous if you get candle wax in your ears. Try medicated ear drops, you can buy them in any drug store. Tylenol or advil or anything that's "anti-inflame" might help relieve any pain. You might just have an ear infection, maybe while cleaning something got in your ear canal? Trying to close the hole led your ear to freak out a bit, I guess? Keep cleaning the piercing spot, but try not to get anything into your ear canal. Don't stick anything in there to help either (like q-tips or whatever.) ... And for the love of god, don't stick hot wax near your face.
You know where this is going... http://flickr.com/photos/spoonifur/ | |

...and you just failed. Hot wax is fun to play with.

i've heard of people getting ear infections from piercings but are unaware of it, which might cause symptoms like "hearing loss" but might not really be hearing loss, it's just the ear clogged from the infection.

All is well now, I'm happy to report

Since it was just pierced and you're sleeping in a way that it can drain down in to your ear., your hearing loss is most likely from wax build up. Let the piercing heal, then start flushing your ear in the shower with hot water to encourage the wax to move. If that doesn't work, go to a doctor, have them clean your ear out, and you'll be good to go. Do NOT stick anything in your ear, even just a little bit. You'll push more crap down and it will make things worse.

Right on. I've been doing just that (warm water & soap in shower) and so far so good, no issues and it's healing quite nicely

you're right on dude. i've seen some nasty piercings start to reject bc something got in it when they tried to clean out their ear with a cotton swab
