Wow, somebody post something interesting ok??? I'll start. What about the team at SMU that's developing a technique to use implanted fiber optics as artificial nerves? Able to communicate with both motor and sensory neurons? Holy crap implications for artificial limbs! a limb that could feel, and manipulate and apply variable pressures just like a real one! And maybe brain-computer interface can use it?

I always thought that the craziest thing about the brain/body interface is that it develops to interpret inputs and produce outputs. The old 'monkey controlling a third robotic arm' experiment is an earlier example. Monkey feeds itself with artificial arm That's using normal wires with sensors reading nerves in the brain, then presumably wires sending from there. As I recall, fiber optics aren't extensible, and most research in making stretchy wires wouldn't apply. Thoughts on mechanical feasibility are probably too far out there, so: implications if it works? Hugely expensive prosthetics, but also maybe new studies in the brain itself.

When my limbs inevitably get damaged in a horrific UE-related accident, I must remember to present myself to them as a test subject. It seems I am not the only one. http://singularity...-bionic-one-video/ I find this rather amazing. I believe that we are on the doorstep of an age where perfectly healthy people choose to "forsake their humanity" and get bionic limbs and other enhancements. Also this: http://singularity...t-1000-days-later/
reckless thoughts abide; anachronistic and impulsive. loosely jacketed against the cold and ten thousand worlds for the choosing. | |
