So I found out I had an oil leak on the XJ the other day. Its only appearing under load and its hitting the exhaust causing smoke of course. Today, I managed to get it up on some ramps and ran the engine up to 2500 RPM to discover, its leaking from a weird place. Its coming from the drivers side along the dust cover of the transmission housing. And yes, I am 100% sure its oil, not ATF+4. I have already replaced the oil filter o-rings, valve cover gasket, oil pan gasket , so that leaves either the rear main seal or something else. Anyone have any ideas? Here's photos too!

i don't think it's a rear main seal... Usually when a rear main fails, it's spectacular and blows the oil in a big dramatic glurt (at least in the couple of cars I've seen it happen in) this is the 4.0L? the one with the plastic rocker cover?

4.0 jeeps leak from the rear main from day one lol. They weep. But they get worse over time. Mine on my xj leaks now, but its not worth my time to fix it. You can change em with the motor in, just take the mounts loose, jack up the fron of the engine by the balancer and pull the pan.

I always thought that with the 4.0, if it wasn't leaking, it was out of oil.

Got it swtiched out last night with my friend Nick. And it sure was the rear main seal because now its not leaking any oil....but man, that thing was so hard, it broke in half trying to remove it.
