last night the woman had a friend who just bought a base 2002 sunfire. she had studded snow tires on the thing so i offered her my old sunfire gt 3 spokes with close to bald summer tires for 100$ at least she could put new tires on nice mags. I was interested in seeing this car she claimed to get an incredible deal on for 1000$. when she pulled into my driveway last night, once i got past the stench of unburned fuel and the sound of a holed exhaust i took a look, got the front 2 tires on, one wheel had 4 different style of lugnuts on it, in back i have a look at the brakes while i have it in the air, no brakes whatsoever. on the drivers side notice a missing lugnut, then i go to take one off and the stud snaps... the other 3 wouldnt budge, so i put a spare lug on the missing one. then i pop the hood i have never seen a broken airbox in a j body, this one looks like someone used a crowbar to change the airfilter... i told the girl id drive it around the block. put my scanguage on, its pulling 14l to 100km... i get 8 in my grand prix in the city. my ecotec cavalier is even better. now im curious, plug my code scanner in, hmm no check engine light yet emission codes up the wazoo... there is electric tape on the check engine light. as well no abs or trac control, wires pulled on the passenger front wheel. now i highly suspect this car has a bad catalyst as well. see what happens when you dont smog check or inspect

Ouch! Of course, most of those defects were likely present when it left the factory. :p

The first mistake was even considering buying a Sunfire.

I know I am in the minority here when I am say this, but a proper state/provincial vehicle inspection program should keep buyers and sellers honest. But of course thanks to politics, that can get ruined in some states and provinces. Oregon is pretty decent. Anyways, yeah, Nostra, that car is one giant issue altogether. How the hell was it stopping? I know the old joke about Quebec drivers see stop signs as suggestions, but this takes that to a whole new level!

i tell you if i had my sunfire still on blocks in the yard i would have given it too her, hell even the green monster would have been better

a few winters ago, 2006 i think, i bought a 93 Lumina for $100... i beat the car mercilessly til about March of 2007. I actually sold it for $100 and felt bad about it the car was such a piece of shit... the kid i sold it to drove the car for 4 months and then sold it for $500. He had no shame.

Sing with me: Domestic cars used to be shit up until a few years ago, la la la la la. Anyway, dont look at the cat yet. Find that exhaust leak and fix it.

BWAHAHAHAHAHA! in New York, a salvage yard actually has to turn in VIN's of cars interned there to the DMV so people can't do this... What blows ballbag is in Vermont and New Hampshire, cars with salvage titles can be registered without a lengthy song and dance. These are cars that were written off by insurance companies, bought by body shops and repaired to be resold. In New York, a car with a salvage title has to be trucked to Albany and inspected. You're probably thinking 'well what's wrong with that?' ...it takes about 6 months to get an appointment (last time I checked... things maybe changed)

Yeah, some of my best deals I have picked up is a car with a salvage title. And, you can take it across the boarder to GA, title it at a friends house, then retitle it back home and magically its not salvage anymore. Not that I have done that. And it wouldn't pass a carfax test, but it does remove it from the current title.

My XJ has a Salvage title. I have no problems with Salvage titles as long as you know WHY it has one.

I've heard of brand new cars being branded as salvage vehicles. Slice the top of a convertible, steal the wheels, seats, and NAV system, now you're down to the point where they'd rather write the car off than repair it.
