Ive poured a cup of plain 30 weight oil in a cylinder and it freed it up over a lunch break. Im talking about a Studebaker with over 300,000 miles that hasnt run in 30 years because the head gasket failed and leaked water into said cylinder. Theres nothing special about Marvel Mystery Oil.

agreed. all that shit in the magical mystery section of the parts store is snake oil.
you can't fix a 200,000 mile engine with a 12oz can of thick snot.

Rebuild it yourself! A jeep engine probably only needs a minor hone, and plus, ITS FUN!

While I would like to rebuild it myself, I don't have the space nor the time to do it.

I did find out today one of our guys in my SAR group said he would look at my misfire problem to figure out what is the root of it at his 4x4 shop.

i was thinking about your problem... a friend of mine had a 1992 Cavalier Z24 and in the course of driving it, he tried racing someone, missed the downshift from 4th to 3rd and tagged 1st instead (at about 75mph) for just a second. The engine fucking redlined hard before he could get the clutch back in. Anyways, when he got to a stop sign, he could hear it the skip... he floated a valve and bent it (intake valve- #3 cylinder, exhaust & intake valve #2, #4 and #5). The car ran ok when you flogging dong, but sitting there idling, it would skip... just enough of an annoying skip that he tore the engine down and found the bent valves. On #3, even the pushrod had a modest bend to it. 3.l MPFI's are not meant to rev past 7000RPM! Only #3 piston had a nick in it where the intake valve had hit it.

what if someone got your Jeep stuck hard and overwound the piss out of it, maybe floated a valve or two and bent it?

While the Jeep Cherokee is pursuit rated, I don't think the previous owner had enough brains to actually redline it

Whats interesting is that the misfire in my case is not triggering a code; I know its OBD I, but in other cars of the same generation I have had, I would get the misfire code on ANY misfire.

in my experience, only OBDII indicates a misfire. The older systems do not. And what I am talking about Skelly is not running the engine flat out against the redline, I'm talking shock load. By that I mean getting the vehicle stuck and revving the guts out of it. A bit different than going 100+mph. When you're stuck, no air is moving through the radiator, everything is getting hot, the driveline is a'draggin... there is a tremendous load on the engine. Even with a rev limiter, when you start beating on things like that, bad things can happen.

just a thought.

ok... lets set this up.
My 98 Lumina and 99 Monte Carlo both had the 3100 SFI V6 under the hood and would only run well on 93 octane. The 96 Beretta I have now has the same engine but gets better mileage on the 87 octane swill. What the fuck?

sam, oddly enough, i had similar issues with the 97 gp, it ran like crap on corn juice, yet the 2002 gp (also with a 3800) runs fine on it. the 97 in its last days to run smooth needed the high test dino juice

the shitty part is now that I am running 87 octane, the fucker starts hard. it will turn over, fire, and then quit. Not sure what is going on there. If I let the fuel pump cycle and then bump the key, it starts. It only does this during a COLD start (like when I come out of work in the AM... the car sits in the wind all night).

stop leak did my 97 gp in, it was a lease from 97-00. my aunt leased it from a dealer outside of toronto. the rad was leaking, they "fixed" it. Well no matter how many times i flushed it i couldnt get all the mud out of that engine. then last summer the rear head gasket started to leak. I assume a passage back there clogged. Anyways, the car was 14 years old and needed love in other places so

I'm leery of the snake oil section; agree most is crap, but have found Barrs Stop Leak will sometimes stop a rad leak. Bad if it will plug up the passages though. Smaller engines with closer tolerances? would probably choke up. It worked on my '80 Malibu 267. (Mightiest little Wee 8 ever made jk )

I put Lucas goop in my '80 350 Chev Pickup. It sort of maybe reduced the blue smoke when cold. Good old engine, just keeps going. That stuff is like molasses, or glue. I think it's the valve seals causing blow by when cold or if I park sideways on a hill. Or just because it's old.

Any one remember Slick 50? The selling agents seemed to find it amazing...

^this engine was packed full of RTV and stop-leak in effort to stop a coolant leak from a gone head gasket. It was a fucking mess when i tore it apart.
