e-readers!

Does anyone use one? A friend of mine recently bought a Kindle 3, and I have to say, it's very nice to read from - so different from an LCD screen. I never thought I'd say it, but I can imagine a future in which I lie in a hammock with one of them, rather than a nice paper book.

Given that new release books here are $30 to $40 (you Americans have it so good!), the price of the Kindle is pretty reasonable, too.

I've had a Sony Reader for about two years now and I love it, PRS-505. I take it everywhere I know I'll have downtime.

Me too. If it was something I just wanted to read, and not keep, like a book I might have borrowed from the library, then I might get it as an e-book, but otherwise, I'll stick to the real thing. First-edition e-books just don't have the same cache. And how do you get the author to sign it?

It seems like an ipad alternative, really. LCD screen, low battery life, heavy. I'm sure it's pretty cool for various applications, but not really a substitute for the e-ink devices.

Oh, I have a kindle now, and it really is great. Small, very light, and so very convenient. I took it on holidays, and found it particularly convenient that I could stop reading something worthwhile, and switch to something trashy while trying to stay awake in an airport lounge.

I just got a Kindle 3 for Christmas. I really like it. While I'll still buy some books in the "old-fashioned" format, this thing is nice for trips, where if I should finish a book early, I can just go ahead and download another. I also like the built-in dictionary and the fact you can highlight favorite passages.

I also bought one of the New York Times Crossword Puzzle books... another great thing for travelling.

Someone told me over the weekend that if you wanted to put a pdf on your Kindle you had to route it through Amazon somehow. Is that true?

the lady folk in my family were just discussing this at dinner a few sundays ago

from what I understand from halfassedly listening to their conversation was that you can "lend" books to each other on the sony but not on the kindle?

I've held both, the kindle is really nice but theres something about holding printed pages in your hand you just dont get with an e-reader.

(side note: when I go to B&N or Borders and pay cash, NO ONE knows what I am reading)

and splumer, that wouldnt surprise me at all. there has to be some way for them to control content. I'm guessing it would be very similar to itunes.

Haven't gotten than in-depth with it.

That said, I've done a bit Google searching and found that you can get free software for your computer that allows you to put freebie books on there. Also, apparently you can hack them. Again, haven't looked too deeply into it yet or tried it myself, but my boyfriend is very computer savvy, so I might let him take a crack at it.

Even looking around the Kindle store, there's now folks who've written books on how to get the most out of your Kindle without paying a ton.

Nah, there's no real security that I've come across yet.

PDF files - just plug in the USB cord and drag the files in and you're done. Likewise with native kindle format books, just copy the file.

So, if you were (and I wouldn't for a moment suggest anyone on this site was) the kind of dodgy person who might download torrents of kindle formatted books, all you do is just drag the files over, and read away.

For someone who works in an industry that sells e-books you'd think I'd be all gung ho about em...I'm not. I still like curling up on the couch, balcony, beach with a book and having no worries about spilling stuff on em or running out of battery.

The university at which I work is considering abandoning printed textbooks altogether in favor of e-books. They did a study with them about a year ago and found 70 percent of students preferred them over conventional textbooks. I wonder if you can highlight, though?

Actually, you can! You can do just about everything and the cost is, for our products, 55% of the regular cost of a textbook. Study notes, keyword searches, testing, retesting, learning objectives, search the entire text for keywords and examples. I work for one of the top 3 educational publishers, at least in Canada, we are muuuuch huger in the US.

The BIGGEST issue is actually cost of people letting us use their copyrighted material electronically.

This would have been great when I was in high school. Walking 1.5 miles to and from school with a backpack that's 1/4 of your weight kinda sucked. I'm going to assume textbooks would be cheaper if they were electronic. This would be very convenient for my college days. Science text books are absurdly pricey.

mainly, to root it into a full blown 7" android tablet.

http://www.techrep...ndroid-tablet/7630

The Nook Color is obviously not a Samsung Tab or an iFail, but it does have a bang-for-buck rating if you are ok with voiding your warranty to get just that much more out of it (and still be able to read books).

I love my kindle. All of my teaching abroad has made it impossible or nearly so to get books in English. Amazon and a few other major book retailers don't ship to where I am teaching at the time. When I lived in Korea, I had one small book store option (an hour and 15 min away). My fam got me the kindle at Christmas so that I can keep up with reading without having to wait a month and a half to get any new book I want to read. It doesn't negate the 6 bookshelves I have of books, or that as soon as I settle back stateside i'll start buying paper books again.

Maybe she want. I think this please. I will probably show up when you are going to be there and calling and they are people okay alright. Bye bye."

I'll be interested to see how you end up. I eventually packed up my bookshelves, and prefer using the kindle these days. It's just so convenient.
