back in the day, the old OHC 2.0L Turbo was pretty gutsy, but the cams wore out if the oil wasn't changed regularly.

I've never seen one that even ran, to be honest. Even the N/A 2.0 ohc was POOP.

that's just it, you're not a GM guy.
the engine was only available for a couple of years in the 1st Generation (N-body) Grand Am, Olds Calais and Buick Skylark/Somerset T-type as well as the Sunbird GT/GT Sedan. It was top dog among the GM small engines. It was rated at 165hp and would shred front tire nicely, hold together to about 7400RPM and pull 15psi all day long (you had to fool with the turbo to get that much boost).

GM also made a VERY LIMITED run of Grand Prix 3.1L Turbo coupes. They're hard to find and even harder to get parts for them.

Yeah, but I've been a mechanic for 11 years... and first worked in a shop that serviced EVERYTHING for 5 of those years... and a GM dealership for almost 2. The only running 2.0 OHC car I ever worked on exploded in a fit of knocking rods during an e-test... and there used to be no shortage of clapped out Sunbird turbos in the wreckers.

The turbo Grand Prix coupes were neat... I used to have a customer with a green one.

the normal 1.8L and 2.0L OHC engines were boat anchors... they'd run to about 85,000 miles and then start in with the 'noise'. Honestly, the 2.0L Turbo's that I've seen were far more stout. The last one I saw was an 87 Sunbird GT sedan with 177,000 on the clock and 95,000 of it (the last 95,000 of it) was teenage angsty abuse (you know, 'mommy wouldn't buy me a honda so i'm maaaaaaaddddd). That's not to say that all was sweetness and light... the Quad 4/ Twin Cam debacle soured me on GM overhead cams until the Ecotec came out.

SO...

I drove the Cruze LTZ Turbo today at GM dealership up the road from where I work... the salesman warned me it might push me back in my seat a bit, as it has 140 Horsepower. I don't think that car goes on sale till the end of the month, but most of the dealerships have one around here to display.

The build quality is nice... it drives well, the interior is great- Follows the same theme as the Equinox/New Malibu/Etc... although the radio and HVAC controls are distracting and don't really make sense. Big knob in the middle of the radio should be for volume or tuning, not random mode selection crap. It's like BMW's iDrive system. Gag me.

I really don't like the looks though, it looks like an old man car for the old man who can't afford a Malibu or Impala.

However... 140 hp from the turbo model? Late 90's Cavaliers had that. It was ANEMIC. Modern diesel Volkswagens are faster.

They did an okay job... but the Cobalt was fine.

I agree with you about the interior.. They did a nice job with it. and WTF is up with that big nob? So strange.

They're making 140 HP out of a 1.4 litre, which isn't bad at all.

It's an entirely unneccesary replacement for a car that pretty much had the bugs worked out...

And it's weak.

Very true. I do think it got a decent run, though. Other manufacturers have a platform life of 5 or so years. I still think Cobalt had strong branding, though. People shopping for Imprezas aren't cross shopping Cobalts, and the new Cruz won't change that at all.

here we are... almost 3 years after buying my 2012 Chevy Cruze 1LT. Let's talk about the high and low points of the car.

High points?

Economy... this thing gets freakishly good fuel economy. On a recent trip from NY to TN, I was averaging 45mpg at an average speed of 78mph.
Comfort... even for a big fat bastard like me, the car is comfy all day long, A/C will refrigerate most things into a frozen state, and the stereo system is adequate for a stock system.
Performance - Handling... this isn't a racecar, but on it's 16" wheels with BF Goodrich Advantage T/A rubber (black, holds air people-mover tires), the car will skitter along at warp speed. I have only had it understeer once badly (if you say the road, you would've slapped me for trying to go 50mph through a 15mph corner), but it held. Even though the engine is rated at 140hp, it does get up and go without fear or hesitation. The only caveat to that is when it's exceptionally hot and humid with the A/C on, the off-the-line is a little doggy and you do notice the lack of displacement there. 1.4L's can only do so much at once.
At 72,000 miles, the car still does not rattle or thump. It still drives straight and true.

Low Points....
well, the paint for starters. My car was finished in Crystal Red Tintcoat which was a $360 option. At 12k, i noticed that the paint was pitted and blasted badly from the doors, rocker panels and leading edge of the quarter panel. After a brief feud with the dealer, GM customer service intervened and the car was painted. At 72k, the paint is blasted again, moreso on the passenger side as that was the side that was utterly annihilated by a large deer in fall 2013.

Brakes... this is kind of a two-for problem so pay attention. This car has a small-displacement, low-compresson turbo engine, so there isn't a ton of engine braking available when you downshift. Couple that fact to the fact that i live in a mountainous area... Yeah, the brakes are pretty warped badly and have been since abour 25k. As a solution, I have ordered racing pads and rotors. One pet project (as an aside) is trying to find a wrecked Cruze with a disc brake rear axle and convert my car to rear disc... Anyways, so the brakes suck.
And finally, one ongoing peeve is the truck release button over the license plate... I am on my 3rd one in 72k.

Other than that, there's nothing really gone wrong with the car.
Just thought you would appreciate the follow up... or maybe you could give two shits.

Update...

My 2012 Cruze LT now has 93,000 miles on the odometer and it's still chugging along.

High points-
:still getting great mileage, even with the excess mileage
:the direct injection is a bit noisy at all idle, but I was told this is normal
:interior is still flaw-free... seats are still looking new, gage faces and cluster/HVAC/entertainment buttons are still tight and look new.
TILL has the factory brakes on it all the way around. Not bad for the way I drive.

Low Points:
:the ongoing saga of the paint... it has to have its nether regions repainted again.
:the trunk release above the license plate has failed, again. this will be the 4th button I have installed.

Other than that, it keeps on keeping on. I figure by the time I have it paid off, or die, it will have well over 150k on it.

Update Part Dos... well, for a week now, the car has thrown a P0299 code. "Turbocharger Underboost". While larking around several Chevrolet Cruze forums, the problem is a failing wastegate, wastegate controller or hardware associated with it (hoses, nipple, clamps). Good news it that I still have powertrain warranty left and the parts if I have to fix it myself are cheap and available from rockauto.com
.

One of my customers bought a used turbo cruise with 30k and driving home from the dealer the turbo granaded and destroyed the engine . They towed it back and she got a new engine out of the deal atleast , is this a common thing with those ?

Updatage... well, we're almost at 111,000 miles. Have had to replace a gear inside the dash that controls the heater range. Parts were $20, to take the dash out of the car to replace it was $672.

Also, had to replace the negative battery lead as it was faulty. Had a letter about that way back when I bought the car. No surprise there. And had to have the throttle body replaced just a couple of days ago... kept throwing a p2135 code on the way back from Buffalo the weekend of March 25th...

also had the car striped and repainted back in February.

I still like the car which is a good thing because I'm not getting a new one.

Doesn't sound too bad. I saw a 5 speed Beretta last week while looking for a car for my daughter. Didn't think those came with a manual. Price wasn't bad, $800 but needed lots of nickle and dime shit.

parts are cheap for the L-body as it shares just about everything with a, x, j and n bodies.
