Petty John's Cave - Pigeon Mountain GA
entry by Ammoclip

Petty John's cave is where I began spelunking. This is the 3rd largest cave in Georgia. There are lots of caves in this area of Georgia. I would say this is a 'beginner level' cave. Even being an 'easier' cave, there are lots of possible places to fall to your death in here! My longest excursion into this cave was 9.5 hours.

Petty John's Cave
Crocket-Pidgeon Mountain Wildlife Management Area
Rocky Lane
LaFayette, GA 30728

GPS 34.664722 -85.3625

After getting off Interstate 75, head west(NW) on Resaca Layette Rd{GA-136West}.

After about six and a half miles the road "t-bones" into the connector. Follow Resaca Layette Rd{GA-136West} to the right.

Fourteen and a half miles along this road it again "t-bones", merging with GA-151. Turn left onto what is now called South Old Alabama Highway, following GA-136.

Only one and a half miles later, follow GA-136 right onto what is now East Villanow Street.

Traveling only four and a half miles you will reach the center of the town of LaFayette. Turn left onto North Main Street{GA-27}.

A short third of a mile later, across from a Family Dollar store, turn right onto West Main Street{GA-193}.

After nearly three miles you will see a small gas station on your right, called "Uncle Jed's Petro".

Turn left, across the street from Uncle Jed's onto Chamberlain Road. Follow Chamberlain road for about three and a half miles.

Look for Rocky Lane on your right. You will also see a small, square, brown sign with binoculars that mentions the W.M.A.

After going about a mile down Rocky lane, passing a small ranger house on the left, you will come to a parking area marked by large rocks. Across the road is the trail leading to the check station board and the cave.
