there is no reason to ask for handouts. I have not tons of places by using bing maps. What I do is go to an old or rust belt city and follow the rivers.

An example is Pittsburgh. follow any of the three rivers in any directions for a few miles out of the cities and you will find a dozen or two along the rivers and then google the locations to find out of the places have been demolished.

Another option is follow the old state roads out of the cites instead of using the interstate and you can find a couple dozen places ( homes, factories, hotels/ motels and train depots.

By doing this you will see enough places to keep you busy for along time and wont need to ask for handouts.

Hello all... this is my first post here, but certainly have been urban exploring well before I knew about this website... which is a good and bad thing. But now that I know, I fully intend on taking all the advice i can from this site. With that said, there is a place today, that I may or may not have checked out in Maryland, that isn't listed in the Maryland DB. I want to post information about this place, as it is amazing! But can't do so until I get Full Membership... which I'm tempted to buy soon. The place I know about is the Susquehanna School For Boys a.k.a. the 'old' Tome school. It is an amazing site to explore and there are photos of the place I would like to post. Anyway, hope to post soon, and was wondering if there had been a thread for this place but was taken down.

you might want to read the rookie forums and notice from other posts that its not really cool to post the names of places like you have done here. yeah - that place is pretty well known but still - dont break every rule on here in your first couple of posts....that said - welcome to the site. and there are more locations in the DB you just wont be able to see them all until you are a full member. instead of worrying about creating a DB entry - post some photos in the geographic section and again - just dont say the EXACT name of the place unless you enjoy getting flamed repeatedly by the rest of the community.

I'm really glad you guys have a trust/belief system like this, it makes me feel a lot better about any information that's shared here about sites. I get so frustrated when I go somewhere and it's been vandalized and graffiti'd up so some things are hard to recognize or are ruined entirely. I'm brand new here and even I'm grateful for this kind of post.

I'd be happy to sell FM memberships =)

It's kinda like the person who does your taxes. He goes through and fills out all the right boxes and enters the information, and you pay him for it, with sexual favors.

So is it generally ok to send members a private message asking about a location? or is that sort of action prohibited? I've seen photos of this spot from a few people, both on uer and elsewhere, so I've thought about asking them but wanted to get some insight first before doing so.

The spot I'm interested in is a bit of a drive for me(2days), but I would love to check it out. I'm just not sure how to go about it finding more info on it. Aside from searching google, which hasn't helped me much.

Best to get to know the people a bit first, establish yourself as a part of the community through your own exploration and the sharing of photos and stories. Otherwise, your results may vary. Some will give information. Some will ignore you. And some (probably the majority) will tell you to go do something physically impossible with yourself and large vegetables.

I answer questions to people I know. I've provided urbex consultation support by SMS sometimes. Things like:

"Try reaching the latch with a tripod"
or
"If you go around the building the other way you'll find the best way up"

This is really great information, thanks! I've been to a few locations that at one point would have been amazing, but now have all of the furniture removed & every square inch covered with graffiti. I love great street art, but come on people... keep it on the street!

I look forward to meeting up with other explorers & checking out some amazing spots together!

I've found that getting off on the right foot on UE by joining in discussions, starting new semi-relevant threads, and posting my photos has gotten me an unexpectedly warm welcome here...
...Basically, I think if you tread carefully and are polite instead of jumping right to begging for locations (and I'm just speaking in general, not about any specific member), people will warm up to you quickly here and will be more willing to share. Or maybe it's just because I have a vagina. YMMV.

I'm sure being female and cute helps, but I'm neither and I've had similar results.

People are reluctant to share locations with people who they don't know. They don't want scrappers, taggers and other vandals to ruin good locations.

As barefootpoetry has said, it isn't that hard to become known on the forum. In her case, she has posted good photographs and write-ups about her explorations. You don't have to be a great photographer or a great writer to gain creditability. Post your better photographs and take a moment to proof read your posts. But more importantly, make positive comments about other's posts. Ask intelligent questions. Listen to other's opinions and thank them for their suggestions.

You left out the sexual favors part. You can't leave that part out.

Also, you're right, barefootpoetry is pretty cute. Good call.
