| | Titan 2B in the dark of night < on 7/14/2010 9:50 PM >
| | | Dan1341 and I made a trip to site 2B last night. It was almost a new moon with almost no visibility outside. I was not expecting the temperature to drop as much as it did when entering, though it was comfortable, even in the deepest parts of the silo. It was evident that much snow has melted this past winter as pretty much every junction room towards the 3 silo's are flooded. You have to walk on the rails. This didn't seem the case in photo's i had seen earlier. Launch room #1 was practically full of water up to the ledge in front of the door. I was hoping to see some kind of drop off, though it appears that at least 20ft+ of water has drained into the room in the past few months to a year. We did find random candles scattered in the Silo tunnels, a bunch of discarded batteries and a hole with some kind of red slime.
No encounters except for a rather large Deer, pair of raccoons and the distant howl / bark of coyotes. Before leaving, we made sure to get some great shots of the night sky. Dan1341's turned out much better than mine. He will most likely upload those later.

| | | That's a wicked powerful flash if it can fill up the entire power dome like that. Nice sideways pano in the silo, but whats up with the orbs? And yes, the temperature in these silos only changes like 8 degrees year round. Shame about the water level rising, I predict this will only get worse as time goes on. Probably taken about 40 years for it to get this high and it will only get higher..

| | | i'd imagine it's even higher than usual with the wet weather we've been having. you've always had to walk on the rails in parts though. nice photos, i'm guessing from the hot spots in the silo panos that you're packing some kind of sun gun?

| | | its interesting that the Gallery Creator brings out those spots so vividly. Those are stitched photo's of the two rooms. I had to use a 500 lumen flood light pointed at the far wall to focus my camera and get the shot. The three or four spots are the points I held the lamp while getting the shot. My regular flash lights couldn't break through the darkness to the other side effectively. If I go again I will try to get focus the camera and cut off the light before taking the shot. Btw, have any of you been to the other 2 silo rooms? If so, are were the water levels noticeably lower than the silo #1?

| | | For the Power Dome shot: I set the camera on a tripod with about a 30 to 60 second shutter release. I then shone my flash light sequentially over the entire room until I thought the camera had picked it all up, as it appeared to. Here are some examples of doing a pano the way I described above that I took on my way out -- though my lens was fogging up a bit towards the end. Next time I might do some 360's.

2 or 3 is lower can't remember which the trick with the lights is to move them around while you're making the exposure so that there's no hot spot

| | | Finally got the time to post these. Was a great trip with Jumpercable! Being from milwaukee myself we don't have anything like this up there (or if we do it is very well sealed). Here are a few of my pics from the night. The link to the whole gallery is below. Enjoy and as always comments welcome.
1. This is looking up at the celling of the "Power House" from below the catwalk.
2. Inside the "Portal" looking up. Standing on the remains of a freight elevator.
3.
4. This rack was in the room next to the launch ops room.
5.
6. 28 VDC Control Cable
7. Some ice/snow on the ground under the beams we walked on.
8.
9. These were fuel storage tanks.

| | | Posted by drewski For those of us Titan one lovers... the site in Sturgis SD... is being completely dug out of the ground. Apparently the land owner wants to turn it in to a lake... here's the post with the pictures. http://www.uer.ca/...d=1&threadid=81989

Any non FM links? Is that the one they did the dynamite to earlier this year? Shame so many are getting destroyed lately, I would give my left nut to own one of those and these buggers find them a nuisance. I am heading home to SD Octoberish and will be heading up to Rapid. Hoping to check out the guided Minuteman tour and some others while I am up there.

Not to resurrect this thread, but I was here in early June and one of the silos was pretty low
I actually rappelled down to the water level and tried to take a few pics, but holding a tripod steady and light painting a lot easier said than done dangling from a rope above that questionable water. Full set on flickr

Nice! I am assuming that was silo #3, the furthest one out? Seems they get progressively emptier the deeper in you get.

Yes, I believe it was. Ironically, it was down the tunnel under the graffiti that proclaims "THIS WAY SUCKS" seen in this photo:
If you look at the original at full size on flickr, you can just barely make out the sign under the graffiti as well. From this view, the Power Dome and the tube to Silo 1 is down the corridor at 12 o'clock, Silo 3 is down the tube to the left, and Silo 2 is down the tube at 6'oclock right behind the camera. The path to Silo 3 twists a bit and there were a bunch of tea candles leftover from someone's previous visit. Also at the bottom of the frame you can just make out the edge of a rubber raft that someone had left. Not sure if there was ever enough water to use it, but I got a chuckle out of it!
