Rally Car Carnage

...some of the victims of Rallye Baie Des Chaleurs:

What happens to your Golf brakes when a Subaru lands on top.

What happens to your Golf if a Subaru lands on top.

The Moustache Bugeye. Hit a bridge. Destroyed the bridge.

Golf again.

The roof of the WINNER of the race.

Rim which Richard Burton finished the race on

Winning car

Winning car. Yes it was on fire.

The car that landed on top of the Golf.

ouch! the first rally car my business sponsored flipped at its first rally... was a mitsubishi galant - it rolled, landed on its wheels and drove back to the pits. all of the other teams who were done with the stage met at the pits and all pitched in to get the car ready for the next stage. the camaraderie in that sport is like no other. not even road racing has that much sportsmanship. it's sad that the sport seems to be dying in the US. i guess it's just too expensive because of all the parts you break.

I've been to a few Rally America events, they seemed pretty strong to me... I know SCCA pro-rally died off though.

ESPN and Rally America are actually working on having European style rallycross events (Kinda like the course at the X games, but with several cars out at once). It's not really rally, but I think it'll gain a lot of interest in the sport.

The pics of the car that won the race are a really strong argument for why I love rally racing so much.

Seriously, I want to see the route book from this! It looks like Evil Kenevil came up with the courses! I haven't seen this much carnage since Oregon Trail 2008 when Ken Block landed upside down after spinning 6 times!

And as a volunteer for a RallyAmerica event, I believe one of the organization officials have told me that event attendance is about double or better than during the SCCA ProRally era in its worse years.

Vermont Sports Car is still big, but they don't have the factory support from Subie or Hyundai anymore. They work right out of the dealership in Burlington VT (they used to be out in Colchester on Hercules Drive)

you'd think Rally would catch on in America... it's violent, bad things happen fast (like a 130mph train wreck), they look like cars in your driveway... is it the lack of promotion or what?

As I recall, Subaru made a decision to transfer all its involvement in motorsports to the Subaru Dealers Association which was more than happy to take it on.

I think its the lack of awareness of the concept of rally in general. I helped out with promoting the Oregon Trail Rally this year for a bit and I had to explain the concept of Rally to many people. Once I did that, they wanted to go.

You should see the carnage in that oregon trail game when your raft tips over and all the oxen drown and then your wife dies of dysentery.

That's what it made me think of. Sorry for the non-car interruption.

To get back to posting on topic-

The only event I've ever seen like this was a short little insert at a monster truck rally. Same basic concept?

EDIT: grammarz

Thanks to Bandi for allowing me to tag along for the weekend. It was a really cool experience to both spectate and help (read: mostly watch due to knowing jack shit about cars) the crews work on the cars during service times.

Definitely gained a new interest in the sport of rally!
