Story behind your car, truck, or SUV

Wondering who here has any back story to your vehicle?

My 91 Cherokee was owned by an rather odd fellow near Grey Court SC. His house was built into the side of a hill with an all glass front. But it doesn't stop there. He had been on a mission trip in the mid 90's to Africa, and he brought the Jeep with him. I swapped him a rather sad 95 Dakota for the Jeep since he was wanting a truck to do more work for the Lord an build houses ( hey, I'm fine with that ). I found out about the Jeeps pond hopping adventure after signing the title over from the Dodge. He told me how he lived in Alabama at the time and they loaded the Jeep on a Cargo ship bound for a port near South Africa ( I don't remember the name ) and it arrived 3 weeks after he did, even tho he thought he had it figured out it would be there the same time he was. He told me that he put about 23,000 miles on it in the 2 years he lived there, that gas was expensive, and he had been robbed several times. His Church was building schools and digging wells for local tribes of people. He didn't get into great detail but after he got done telling me how the children loved to ride in it since it had AC he said that he simply thought I should know, since it never let him down, or stranded him anywhere in the harsh conditions over there that it should do me fine here. I thought it was pretty cool of him to tell me of all of this. He said he still had the paper work and tag he had to run over there ( didn't know they had tags over there? ) and that if he ever dug it up he would call me and I could come an get em. Its been several years and no call but I'm still glad I got to have a little back ground info no the poor thing lol.

Another was my 1969 Jeepster Commando I bought back in 96 or so. I was actually looking at a CJ-6 on the fellows property when a glint caught my eye. I ask him what else he would be willing to sell that ran ( guy had tons of shit, but the poor CJ-6 was rusted so bad I really didn't want to deal with it ) and he started talking about this Duster around back that ran but didn't have reverse and this Nash Metro that just needs put back together, so I asked him about the windshield that looked jeepish out by his other building in the woods. He said it was his dads old Jeep. I said, hell does it run? He said it did when his father had parked it there in 89. He said his father passed away a few years after that and he honestly had forgotten about it. We walked over and looked at it. All original with dealer installed AC and the Station Wagon top. 61,000 original miles. I asked him what he wanted for it, and he said he really didn't want to sell it. I asked him did he plan on fixing it up? He was quiet for a solid minute and said no I'm not. If you want it, I'll take $800 for it ( same that he wanted for the CJ-6). We had to cut down 3 pine trees to get it out of there. Put in a batter, cleaned the points and poured some fresh gas down the carb and she fired right up. Drove it for years before I decided someone else could restore it better than I could. Wish I never made that decision ( its in Canada now )

76 Monza was intersting in that I never drove it. Ever. Dealer friend of mine owed me $50 bucks and was in a bind. I told him to pay me when he could. He said he didn't like that sorta thing and wondered if I wanted an old Monza. I was like sure, but its worth more than that. He laughed and said you havn't seen it yet. Well the Monza only had 23,000 miles on it. It was a coupe 4 banger and a auto. Had the WORST Liberty bell interior ( something about the 1776-1976 thing ) but it ran. Rusted all up and down the bottome of it. I got in, started it up. put it in gear, and heard the worst noise I ever heard from the tranny. Wouldn't move. It strained but would just bang and settle back. I asked him how in the hell it only had that many miles on it. Well story goes his brother got him the car the month before. It was a theft recovery after 20 years ( this was in 1999 ). It had been found next to a pond on some farmers land in MI. The car had been stolen from Ohio. So it basically go stolen, driven to MI. Dumped at the back of this field. And went un noticed for 20 years. The farmer called it in, and it turned up stolen but the farmer was able to get the title and carlot mans brother bought it for a $100 bucks. Trailored it all the way down here with $$$ in his eyes for his "low miles" "rare" Monza. And of course, with the frame rotted out of it no one was interested. I sold it to a boy for $200 bucks who needed more sheetmetal for his Dirt Track car.

Anyone got any more interesting stories on the past of their car or how they got it?

My precious MK3 GTI (god I loved that car) was cursed. I bought it with the door dented and never understood what happened exactly but what ever hit the door really fucked it up. Any way a year passes and some old German dude approaches me in broken english saying thats his old car and that he bought it new in 1998 and that it was hit by a garbage truck.

So after being tired of seeing the damage I had the whole body redone, all rust removed and dents too. This lasted about 6 months until a drunk driver smashed into the same god damn door while the car was parked infront of my house and long story short insurance wouldnt cover me. about 8 months passes and I decide its time to get rid of her, so I sell her to some idiot kid for 2500 bucks.

8 months later I found out the car got hit again in the same side, except this time the frame bent, but it was kind of a good thing because the kid bought my Jetta to replace it lol.

RIP gti <3

My black New Beetle was purchased new by my dad in the summer of '99. I LOVED that car (He was going to get a diesel Jetta, but we always had a few classic Beetles around figured we may as well just get a Bug). Years passed, the car kept going and going, and going- and a couple years ago, he mentioned trading the car in to get a new one. I basically explained if that car got traded in, I'd be seriously unhappy. So I bought it off him, and it's continued to be an awesome little car for yet another 100,000 km. Even had it repainted last year (front end was getting some road acne after half a million KM).

Some of my classic cars have an interesting story behind them, but I'll post them at a later time.

I think most cars have interesting stories, but I always thought my S-10 was kind of cool:

My '85 S-10 I found about an hour and a half away from my house sitting for sale in the front yard of a church, bought it already customized but in sad shape. It had a full body kit, cowl hood, swapped in hi-output 305ci V8, etc. I ended up seeing a sticker on the inside of one of the body kit pieces while fixing it up that said it was manufactured in 1994. I painted the truck black with white racing stripes (it was black with purple and light blue fade graphics) and it didn't really look much like its old self at all...Months after it was painted, my uncle and his brother were up at my house in the garage, and his brother kept saying how familiar the truck looked...Ended up realizing it was the truck that he had originally customized, back in 1994, he hadn't recognized it because of the fresh paint. He said he bought it out of some guy's back yard for $200 and swapped the engine and customized it for his wife to drive as her daily driver for years. Thought that was neat.

My second car was a 1976 Camaro. I bought it from a widow. She had an odd story to tell and I always wondered about all of it. The guy who had owned the car (for 10 years before I got it) had the same first, middle, and was a Jr also. His last name started with the same letter.

He was born in MD and moved to SC when he was a baby, same as I. She showed us a photo and we looked very similar (not twins but could pass for cousins, if not brothers. He was born the same month as I and within 3 days 15 years apart.

The worst was the car had sat for 5 years or so since his death, which was a suicide (he walked out into a field across the street from his house and gun to the head.

She hadn't sold the car because of attachment and she said he had mentioned it several times in the suicide note he left. She said he had many many things going wrong in life and a week prior to this, he couldn't get it to start.

Now after sitting 5 years, with old gas in it, left just as he had, we put jumpers on it and the damn thing started right up. She said she never even had messed with it, because she figured it was something serious since he was a pretty good mechanic and couldn't get it started. It was a pretty good car over all.
