Awesome pic Germ! Is that a new one??

I'm gonna take a class for the camera. And have been hanging out with some photographers too who will help me learn. This back to work thing is really cramping my style though lol

on a serious note its not that hard,

iso funnctions as the sensors sensitivity, higher iso brighter picture but grainy "noise". If you zoom in on the pic it looks like static is forming

shutter speed obviously exposes the sensor for how much light, slower speed more light but more jittery, faster is darker but more crisp.

Aperture (F stop) is the tricky one to gauge compared to the other main two, this affects light exposure again and depth of field, I don't think I properly set this most of the time.

A class would explain it better in person with seeing how it affects the picture of the same subject.

Thanks Germ. I appreciate that. I still have to get a lens and then I'll be good to go. The camera body was a gift from a local photographer and now I need to find a basic lens to start with. I'm excited though. My cell phone is ok but this can take it to the next level.

Go to Kijiji.

Buy something like a 20mm or 35mm non-zoom (“prime”) lens.

Thanks. I've been on kijiji but haven't been looking at that type of lens. I'll definitely check it out!

Edit: This might be too broad a question and I will do some research but what would the benefit to this lens be vs the basic 18-55 mm lens? I'm realizing how much I need to learn!!

its a good range of lens size when buildings are the subject and for most ue based photography.

my 10-20mm wide angle i usually use is a bit wrong but it helps for long exposure at night.

18-55s are notoriously the cheapest lenses with the worst glass. Do not pay more than like $20 for one lol.

A prime lens has a few benefits.

1. Not being able to zoom forces you to innovate
2. Prime lenses have better optics
3. They often let in more light and have better optics
4. They usually work on both crop sensor and full frame lenses so you don’t have to buy them twice if you upgrade your camera to a full frame body.
5. They retain their value. I paid $60 for a lens in 2009 and could sell it today for 80. I paid $300 for another lens in 2011 and could still get at least 250 for it today. The same could not be said for crappy 18-55mm lenses.

Beware, some older lenses may be manual focus on your camera, BUT, I did this for 2-3yrs with one of my lenses (the $60 one) and it teaches you an invaluable amount about focus, having to focus the camera by yourself all the time, and it lets you understand the camera’s AF system much better in the long run.

Thanks guys. I really appreciate the info. I'm sure I'll ask more things but don't know what I don't know currently.

Germ, once I get this figured out, I'd love to go back down where those old buses were by the RV. There'd be some cool shots down there. Maybe something this spring/ summer.

Exploring in Alberta is basically just an exercise in bastardized nouns. Ford Exploder, Hellhole, Dentpharm, Pidgets, Po-po, Bando, Naked cat man, etc.

This is the hot pic on edmonton IG feeds the last couple of days. The guy has his name and location included. Talking about heading downtown next. Makes me crazy, especially because all the idiots are cheering him on.

Edit: It is also posted on another feed called edmontonliving and they had to shut the comments off because so many were negative.

That's some unfortunate instagrammery.
