why would a manager rush you if he's getting straight time for your work, theres no benefit to fast turnover all that matters in a straight time shop is utilization (hours billed for hours worked) unless he's fudging your labour times which is FRAUD and has nothing to do with the straight time system.

Well... no, I mean, more jobs passing through the shop = more money, so the faster he could get shit done, the better for him as he made a commission.

It was Canadian Tire. It was a total clusterfuck. Everyone else in the shop was flat rate, but me being the apprentice at the time got salary/all the shit jobs the licensed techs didn't want to do.

i have to say, if its a simple job and you know exactly what the problem is, and dont feel like doing it yourself, crappy tire is sometimes an option. i once had 2 wheel bearings changed there for less than my mechanic would have charged. but NEVER go to crappy tire and say "may car is acting up and i dont know why"

I once got a flat tire replaced at Canadian Tire and the whole service area experience just reminded me of Pep Boys where they hire dolts in the service bay.

I just have a hate-on for the Campbellford store. A very large one.

I love the corporation, I just despise the sleazebag that runs that store and what he's done with the place.

I think you are trying to compare apples to oranges.

If I got what you are saying right, you are a forklift mechanic. In other words, you are employed by the company who owns the forklifts. Naturally they are going to pay you straight time.

i was a forklift mechanic for a while, on the road, working for a dealership. yeah, i got callouts after hours. but i still worked for customers who owned machines they bought from us. i now work for a scrap metal processing company repairing grapple cranes, draglines, wheel loaders and excavators that they own. no, ive never had to earn money under the flat rate system, and i don't regret it...

thats the incredible thing with CT they are huge yet every store is independantly owned! so there is a huge difference between the service departments

it doesn't stop there. Not only are they independantly own, but there is ConSTANT movement of owners from store to store climbing the chain to bigger stores. So this years owner might be out in 2 - 4 years

I wish the Campbellford store owner would stop owning his store... either by selling it or going to jail for being a coke dealer...

yeah the guy that owned the store in my area J.D. matte had it for about 12 years then they built a brand new store in the ottawa area and he was promoted there, the chateauguay store was under corporate stewardship for a year while they built a new store next door.

canadian tire though is great for the funny money you get, only rewards program i know where they are not tracking you, nothing at all sinister in that

I remember when I was like 14 we had a blow out on the 401, near coburg I think... Anyways long story short only place we could go was Canadian Tire, they knew we were in a bind and forced us to buy two tires, and then they left our car in the parking lot with all the windows down and some one stole a bunch of shit from the car ( probably the mechanic himself)

I'm surprised they didn't force you to buy 7 tires, some for garden tractors and some for an SUV or something. Okay, jk, I don't like putting any company down, but when they deliver a crap product or service, we really are helping things by complaining or going on a rant, and they really deserve it. Eventually word gets out, and they improve or go out of business.

Here's what I like about CT:

Decades ago I had lost all respect from banks, my credit rating was below zero. I crawled into a CT store, trying to buy a six pack. After realizing they don't sell Molson Canadian, (easy mistake eh , I got a CT credit card with a 300.00 limit! That would be about 1000.00 in today's economy.

Over a period of about 3 weeks I rebuilt my credit rating, and then went on to land the big Visa, and regained my reputation as a card carrying credit whore.

Last winter we had serious snow. No one had snow tires for my Dad's Echo. One CT store did, they held them, and then the guy agreed to sell me only two, after first refusing.

He said the only way I can sell you two, is if you tell me you already have two of the same tires. Not one to lie, I did, because it was a special occasion, (Christmas + snow) and he said; 'that's the right answer'
Someone else was going to install them, the law now says, it's four or none. Ended up buying four, because the guy wasn't a tool, and four is actually better with the new ubergrip ice radials. Plus it's the law apparently.

Also sometimes CT has amazing sales. 100.00 tools can be got for 35.00 bucks.
Sure they should never have sold for more than 49.95, but the illusion of value feels so good. Some Masterkraft electric cutting tools are made by reputable companies like Ryobi...

And the money, woot, it's printed on paper that feels, smells, rolls and tastes like real money. If only they would exchange it for cash.

do you people have any idea how hard it is to get the CORRECT part from an Auto Zone or Advance Auto on the weekend????
it's always the same archetype... spikey-haired little douchebag or gross, too tall redneck farm schmuck behind the counter. they barely speak a cognitive english. they have NO IDEA what car you drive let alone what the part looks like or what it does... they just look up shit in their little computers, you know, the programs that look like something a 4 year old would use to learn their ABC's... and then they look up and say, "A 96 Beretta? That's a Chevy right?"
Yes.
"It says here that there isn't a V6 in that year. Are you sure that it's a 6 cylinder?"
Positive
"the intermediate pipe is probably a dealer item. we don't carry it."

^that's usually the point where I go berzerk.

I always laugh when I go into Advance Auto after work, still in my shirt and tie. They always offer to install my wipers... because you know... there's no way a guy dressed up would get his hands dirty or possibly understand the complicated process that is installing windshield wipers.

thats one thing , crappy tires parts counter usually delivers the right part, I always liked the lifetime warranty on motomaster tires. I had sidewall damage, they replaced it for the cost of treadwear, 12$!!!
