nismo, i have to say you were right on the noise from the ecotec. i thought i had some major problems with the noises it makes at a cold start. Took it to 2 independant mechanics (not my dealer) just for an opinion, turns out its just piston slap! I was worried it was the timing chain. But that would be a loud sound like a guy beating my car with a chain according to both mechanics. Im thrilled at the gas mileage on this thing though, but man when its cold its cranky and noisy lol

Also, i hear this SeaFoam stuff is great for engines in their mid 40k's... see people ranting about it in 'Vette forums. It wastes an oil change, but apparently gets out any rough idle and weird noises. Then, like Sam said, run the better oil.

we HAD to do an engine flush on the Beretta as the blown intake gasket had filled the crankcase with 10+quarts of oil-coolant cocktail. Seems to be fine now save for a lazy lifter on start up. Also i am oil snob... Valvoline or Royal Purple in my machinery.

I could use a flush and new gaskets, but with almost 180K miles and timing issues, I'm just holding her at the status quo. It's not worth my time or money to do more work to her in this state. And it's mean to her.

I thought I remember you saying to Dukes and I once something like "I run nothing but Mobil 1 and it will be a cold day in HELL before I use something else"

Just piston slap??? That ain't anything to be relieved about. Did they really say It's nothin' to worry about?

Between piston slap, timing chain noise and the injectors, they're definitely not the quietest engines.

Ya know come to think of it, My Triumph Speed Triple, clatters like a son of a bitch at idle. Cleans right up and purrs like a kitten from 1300rpm to redline @9500rpm

I use 30wt in most everything of mine, I hear more crap from friends about it, but I've never had a motor fail due to an oiling issue.

How would the manufacturer know that you used only Mobil 1 through the life of the vehicle? Besides that, how can an OEM mandate the manufacturer of the oil? I'm not even sure that would be permitted under Competition Laws. bandi? as a GM tech.... any ideas?

They can do chemical tests on the oil and stuff if anything goes wrong internally. HOWEVER, I'm pretty sure if the oil's API rating meets or exceeds manufacturer's spec, they can't do anything to your warranty.

you want a laugh, look into the warranty stance on the manual transmission in the supercharged SS.

Oh? We have had a couple of them explode. The pin from the diff tends to exit towards the rear/bottom of the diff case.

GM won't warranty them anymore.

Oh ouch. They do tend to get rather abused.
